Using my mobile in USA.

I have just read Martin's article: "Mobile Roaming: Cheapest Calls When You're Abroad" and I'm now confused about whether my mobile will work in the USA. According to Martin's article international sims won't work in the USA and you need to buy a local sim. I was under the impression that as long as your phone is a tri-band it would work in the USA?

Please advise.

Your're right that a triband or quadband phone is needed as the frequency bands are different.

I don't think he means that UK or global SIM cards don't work there, but recommends against it as there is no cheap roaming there at all.

Compare US networks and tariffs on http://www.prepaidgsm.net/en/usa.html

Yes it should be ok as long as you have triband although it wont be the cheapest way of doing it.

MSE says you cant use International/Global Sims he doesnt say you cant use your own networks sim.If you read the aricle again your see a section about Intl/Global Sims.

Being in the USA, wouldn't a UK sim be classed as an international sim?

No it would be a UK Network Sim,you are using to roam. If you read the article your see what he means by Intl/Global Sims, and how they work.

  • I sent a few texts, picture messages and made a couple of very short calls (maybe 10 mins in total) while I was in the states in October. used my UK Orange SIM.

    Cost me 60 quid................

  • I used uk2abroad when in the New York last month - all in all cost me £30 with about £20 credit left over - I use the phone for business a lot, and at around 20p/min it saved me quite a bit - especially with the xe rate :) check out Martin's article for the link http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/phones/cheap-roaming-calls#US
