Hi,
im being charged by Scottish Power and British Gas for electric to the property i live in, both claim to supply us! Where do i stand?
backstory:
moved into a new build house Feb 2019, electric was supplied by Scottish Power, we were told by landlord to call all suppliers they listed to set up accounts etc with them. All fine except SP.
SP claimed not to supply us even after giving them meter details, they claimed the property was still listed under the builders and it needed changing before we could set up an account. I contacted landlord to get it changed, they said they were on to it.

Every month for about 11 months we still contacted SP to set up the account only to get the same reply each time ‘we dont supply you’, and the usual back and forth between them, us and my landlord. My next door neighbours were having the same issue.
After 11 months of living here we reveived a letter from SP stating basically ‘oh we do supply you after all - heres a £900 bill to be paid by x days’.
We could not afford the bill in one go, tried setting up various payment plans but none of which we could afford on top of the monthly electric bill. My partner was in a despute about this with them for a few months as they were being unreasonable.
Fast forward a year later, me and partner split up, and he moved out, he was still in the despute with SP but regardless said he will take responsibility over the debt. So we closed the SP account in March 2021 (have evidence of this), and set up a British Gas account in my name to supply electric. All been going fine and i have been paying BG monthly, until today i received a letter from SP with a bill of over £100 for the period of april - now. I called them and told them they didnt supply us anymore, but according to them they do and they even checked the national database to make sure.
What do i do and where do i stand? I have paid BG for 3 months now, and now owe SP a further £100 which i cant afford right now. I just dont know what to do.

Welcome to the forum.Unfortunately, it's the wrong one: it's for LPG, Heating Oil, Solid & Other Fuels, which is a bit of a backwater.Try re-posting in Energy and you'll get more replies.0

@kmt1235 Before you repost as Gerry has said - do check that the meter is only supplying you (switch everything off and see what happens) and check the serial number on the meter against that shown on the bill.
PS you are not the first to post in the wrong bit and won't be the last.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0
