iPhone tethering range extender?

The subject of using a range extender with a hotspot created using tethering on an iPhone appears on the web from time to time, with mixed results. I have been particularly unsuccessful with an original iPhone SE and a Netgear dual band extender.
Purely by chance, I noticed a hotspot setting on Windows 10 and found to my surprise it can create a WiFi hotspot using a different ID and password to the iPhone it is tethered to. This is feature of “all” Windows 10 computers, at least it is on my Win 10 Home and Pro. Not only does it work, it seems to work well and without dropouts. As a bonus, it is an easy way to update the operating system (iOS) on an iPhone via another iPhone providing a tethered connection, something that normally fails to work.
It doesn’t create a 5GHz network from a 2.4GHz one, which a dedicated WiFi extender can, but it is free and very easy to configure.
