    UPDATE:
we turned the electric underfloor heating off at its mains - we’d wrongly assumed just turning its thermostat right down meant it wasn’t being used. WRONG! We’ve since noticed the floor feels much colder so it must have been doing something to keep it at a very low temperature.

We now wake up in the morning with an electric reading of around 160w for the night, compared to 1.5kwh last week.

For once we haven’t over hit the weekly budget according to the in house display unit. Wow!

     Thanks for the update.

There is normally the ability to set a low-level temperature where it will come on irrespective of the thermostat timer.    The figure is often around 5 degrees.   It's unlikely you have suffered a temperature that low recently.   So, perhaps your low level figure is set too high?   It hasn't been inadvertently set to the preferred thermostat temperature by any chance?

I’ll double check this thank you.
also my husband just declared he may has misread the clock this morning and actually given current usage rather than overnight usage, argh I’ll check again tomorrow. Thanks for your help! Got a week to pick a new tariff or stick with EDF.

I was going to query that as 160W makes sense as a base load level but not as 160Wh for the entire night.

Last night we used 1.22kWh when we got up we realised a child had left on the demister mirror in the bathroom all night and one bedroom fan. Still happy with that though! Underfloor heating definitely completely off. Thanks all.

Whenyou get used to what you are using and what your base line consumption is then it's easy to glance at the IHD when you are going to bed to check that stuff is turned off rather than going around the house house checking everything individually.

Dont dismiss the IHD, use it the way it was intended - it's easy to see when stuff is on if you've got an idea of the baseline.

Following this thread and will go through it over the weekend. Had a smart meter installed 60 days ago and realised we are using approx 1200kwh - around 20 a day.

large 4 bed house, 3 of us. Two fridge freezer, wine chiller, fish tank and the usual sky boxes phone cables etc etc.

not sure if these seem ‘high’ but certainly gave me a shock when I saw how much it was costing per day.!

Ensure it's displaying Watts, then you can easily see the magnitude of rogue device you're looking for (eg: 25W for a fan, 500W for those kitchen halogens). Don't forget fridge freezers and boilers bump the baseload up and down, but over time you'll spot the familiar baseload readings.
  • 12000 units a year for 5 people is about right probably.
