Notice required on rental

We've been in our current rental home for 8 months, it's our first time renting so I don't really understand the notice period we have to give.
We were originally on a 6 months contract, which ran out and we are now on the rolling contract. I know we have to give 1 months notice and when the landlord told me this, they said something about it had to be by XX date, but I can't really remember what they said. Our contract date starts on the 25th of a month. So say we need to give notice in January 08, we give written notice before 25th January 08 and they will be paid their final months rent on the 25th January, and then we move out by February 24th? Have I got this right?
Also, we didn't have an inventory done when we moved in. We are a bit concerned as the house has got some wear and tear and then some extra scuff marks due to the house not being water tight (landlord knows about the leak, but says they can't repair it). I'm worried they are going to withhold the deposit from us because of these problems that should have been fixed by the landlord. Is it right that because there is no inventory, they cannot prove the state of the house and therefore cannot with hold the deposit? The deposit is held in one of those protection schemes, so I'm hoping that this means it's less likely.

Shouldn't make a difference, though if there was a dispute the protection scheme should rule quicker and cheaper than a court action.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. deposit schemes do have an arbitration service, but, at the end of the day, if both parties cannot agree terms for the return of the deposit - the tenants/landlords only course of action is the small claims court
