new lawn mower blade is dull

Hi,

I'm not sure it this is the right forum to post.

I've bought a cordless lawn mower online.  Received it today and used it straight away.  But the blade is very dull, it barely cut the grass.  I've tried to adjust the cutting height to see if it makes any difference which is not.  I haven't contact the shop as they closed at 3 pm.  I'm not sure what is the best way to proceed?  Tell them the blade is dull and ask for a replacement?  I would ask for a refund but they stated on the website if the item is used, they're going to reduce 25% of original purchased and depends on their inspection by their technician.

Nothing wrong with the machine apart from the dull blade.

Advise please.

Thanks.

San

I've never seen a lawnmower blade that was sharp. (well what I would call sharp).

They generally get it done with torque.

I expect you bought one that is not good. There are often compromises with battery powered devices. (I assume it is battery? Want cordless get petrol for a mower).

You would be arguing its not fit for purpose rather than change of mind. Whilst there may also be issues with their terms for a change of mind thats not relevant in your circumstances and you'd be rejecting the goods.

Clearly for the majority of items faults only become apparent when you attempt to use them.

    It's Hyundai HYM40LI330P.  Purchased from hyundaipowerequipment.co.uk

Contact Hyundai????  Until you've spoken to them theres not much to go on.

Did it come already assembled? I remember many years ago my son bought a new hover which he said wouldn't cut the grass. I had a look at it and he'd put the blade in upside down which meant that the cutting edge was facing backwards!  Have you checked the cutting blade is positioned correctly?

I'd agree with @Carrot007 in that mower blades tend not be "sharp" in the sense you would expect to cut yourself if you ran a finger over the blade, they tend to cut the grass via brute force so it may well be that the mower simply isn't very good. If it simply can't cut your grass then you need to exercise your statutory consumer rights and argue that it isn't fit for purpose.

As you also purchased it online there is the option of returning under the distance selling regulations (the CCRs) however, the seller can deduct an amount because it can be argued that your usage has gone beyond what is necessary to confirm the nature and functioning of the goods, ie, the sort of thing you can do when buying from a bricks and mortar shop.

It is a rotary blade, not a standard roller style blade and the guidance is that if the blade does not cut then it should be sharpened, odd that it is blunt on purchase. However, is it on the right way around, eg is the cutting edge (the one with the fully straight edge) going forward when spinning?

Yes, but "sharp" is a relative term. The edge of a rotary blade is never going to be sharp as a pair of scissors or a knife, unless you sharpen it yourself of course, but it should be sharp enough to cut grass.

Is there a clear plastic safety cover on the blade ??
That should be removed before use ??
Has the blade been installed incorrectly by the manufacturer ??
