He has such limited involvement @joedenise that I’m sure he’d not care either way. I was curious as to what others would do that’s all

I would discuss with your DH too. We always discuss what we’ll do with “extra” money before we sell the thing or take on the extra work.

We usually (but not always) split the extra 50/50 between the family budget and the person who earned it. DH often earns extra selling copper cable (a perk of his work is he’s allowed to keep/sell scrap which can’t be used). So if he made £200 doing this he might keep half and send me half for savings.

If we are feeling more skint then sometimes we keep just 20% for ourselves and put the rest in savings. This makes sense cos our personal money is usually 20% of our salaries (includes gym, phone and clothes as well as fun money).

But often what we do is decide in advance the extra is going to something specific. He often tries to sell scrap before Christmas and will use it to boost the Christmas fund. Or we might sell something specifically to boost our holiday pot if we are going on holiday soon.

If it’s selling something which belonged to one of us personally (old phone, clothes) that person does just keep it all. But a household item we either split or put towards a specific outing or pot.

If you're not sure why not discuss with your DH to see what he thinks.  Personally I can't see any reason why you shouldn't put the money towards something you want to replace but at the end of the day it's your decision which way to go.

That is pretty much exactly what I was going to say

I didn’t bother discussing this time, knowing we needed new saucepans and replaced those instead. Ours were very good but the non stick has all but come off and I’ve now learnt how bad this is so needed to replace with having such small people in the house.

He gave me my old G*rmin back to use as I’ve lost mine, so no need to replace that for now.

In future, I’m going to keep what I originally paid for and take a cut of anything else since I went to the effort of sorting out the sale but the rest will go into a savings pot. Husband to be advised 🤣

Diary entries have been sparse of late, I haven’t had much to add I don’t think.

We’ve had a week in centre parcs which was wonderful, first family holiday and budgeted/planned for and teeny bit of spends left over I think. Granted it was Monday - Friday and we mostly ate at the lodge but we did have a few treats outs, beers ice creams etc and our last night in the pub but we would have easily spent the same budget again otherwise so felt pretty pleased with myself. I did often find myself being too tight however the budget was also to include any paid for activities whilst we were there and I didn’t want to have to limit those so I guess it still worked out right.

I have to do some pot shuffling with money as Ive ended up with cash and money taken from the wrong accounts this week on account of just rushing but pretty certain that it’s all accounted for somewhere.

We’ve been collecting apples from our local park (literally to the left of the fields my house backs on to) as there is a tree for the community and using them for various things. I am now taking a leaf from @su@Suffolk_lass’ book and going to bottle some of them! I wouldn’t gladly done the same with my HG tomatoes however they got blight and I’ve lost vast majority of what was left on the plants. I do wonder if I can do similar sort of thing with aubergine as we’ve got about 10 on the plant in the little lean to. They’d be like antipasti right?

I have this week home and then back to work for 5 weeks from next week, eldest one is back in nursery and OH is home with the littlest. I am looking forward to it although despite its challenges I have loved having the summer with both children. I think i need to manage my leave accordingly so I can do something fairly similar next summer!

The weather is changing and autumn is my favourite season of the year, usually I celebrate being able to get my ugggggg boots out however this time I’m pleased to say I’ve got my soup maker out instead.
Earlier in the summer I bought it when I grabbed a few things from a ‘furniture revive’ shop for my smallest’ bedroom and for £25 thought it was a bargain for a soup maker. Little did I know they retail for £90+ so I was having a little smile to myself today at that. My husband is not a soup fan at all but I’ve tried to make todays first batch spicy so he might have some! Coats and boots are next to come out! Hurrah.

Both children need new clothes now, my youngest has suddenly got huge and no longer fits his 0-3 (I mean he’s almost 4 months so it makes sense but still?!) and my daughter needs some bigger winter stuff really. I’ll not splash out but I don’t think that my eldest will need that many anyway as although this winter she is another year older, she’s no longer in reusable nappies which used to make her bum bigger so everything fits better now although the sizes are still 12-18ms.

We are hosting a party this weekend coming so need to prepare a fair bit this week for that. Must remember that when I’m scrolling through the forum reading diaries etc and not thinking of the party decorations and itinerary!

  • I've just been encouraging Zafiro1984 on the Reverse Meal Planning thread to try cooking (stewing) fruit and then popping in hot jars as though jam-making. Screw lids on, tip upside down until they pop to seal and then they store on the shelf until you want them - use a portion approximate jar as they don't keep once open but ideal for "free" storage of our produce. Easier and cheaper than bottling as no sugar syrup to contend with.

You could try bottling in herby olive oil for your veg but I would look up a recipe to see if there is anything else to be aware of. I can't see why not though. I have lots of cherry tomatoes still coming - I might try that myself

Thanks @Suffolk_lass I’ll probably end up cooking them, I love aubergine.

Day 1 of 20 back working today, nice to be doing something different but would like to be out of the house even if only for a few hours I think rather than just away upstairs. I can still hear the children and I’d much prefer to be downstairs with them!

Hosted a party at the weekend which everyone seemed to enjoy. I think I struggled to believe that was the case until about half way through the evening but eventually got my head around it.

Money wise, I can’t commit to much at the moment. My pay is wrong due to maternity so holding on to any extra for when they want it back and using savings to bridge the gap of what should be, due to maternity.

My boy is in a sleep regression at the moment and woke up more times than I can remember last night. I’m talking 15 plus between 10 and 7am. Of course it happened the night before I was due to start back at work so feeling tired today which I’ve noticed is quite well linked to me feeling all kinds of uncomfortable mentally. I don’t feel tired, physically, it’s the way in which my brain works when I’ve had little sleep which reminds me that I’m tired if that makes sense. It doesn’t however, remind me, that thinking negatively and putting pressure on my self to do/be better is only because of being tired. So got a case of the Mondays today for real. Maybe need a run to feel a bit better I think.

I’m really behind on current affairs at the moment, money wise, budget related and need to have a read of what has been going on around the world!

Not sure I articulated what I meant yesterday very well but after a talk with my husband I think my mental cup is just a bit empty at the moment. After a better sleep, I don’t feel as ugh as I did yesterday but that could also be due to having chatted through stuff as well.

@Blackcats, sorry if my diaries make little sense 😂

I received a lovely notification of a tax rebate of £260 last week so thats been spent on things to winter proof the house.
A 3 tier heated airer to prevent use of the TD
A curtain pole and single curtain for the front door
Radiator cover for the hall way

The radiator is a small part of home renovations which ive been wanting for a little while but since the money was almost a windfall, ive put it to use!

Back to work last week and ill admit im bored but thats not helped by the fact there is little work for me right now.

Had a few moments of realisation recently which have helped my mindset and got a wedding to look forward to this weekend. Oh.. and my own 6 year wedding anniversary. Iron is the traditional 6th anniversary gift so hub and i agreed on a new cast iron dish for the kitchen. Hoping to have a special meal saturday too and watch the boxing together. Rock and roll celebrations now we have children!
