If you want a credit card and are looking to build some history, then yes.

  • If you have little credit rating (ignore the meaningless score) and a very thin file then yes a credit card used every month and paid off in full by direct debit after the statement is generated is a good thing as it shows you can manage credit. If you were applying for a mortgage this year, depending on when it might be a gamble to have that extra credit but if you were talking 12 months time, I'd take one out yes.

How bad is bad and what is the minority that isn't sorted?
Forget the score as it matters not, what does matter is the details on your credit report. Depending upon how bad the bad is or how bad the un-sorted is will dictate how easy or difficult it will be to get a mortgage. (Or even a credit card for that matter)
