We had a similar situation. FIL with Alzheimer’s who wanted his house to go to the children. He resisted going into a home but eventually he had to. We found a good home close to us and moved him into it. By then the children had POA and yes he was self funding at a cost of £1000 per week. They told him that it was being paid for which made him happy and his quality of life increased, he was much happier being surrounded by people and lived to 91. Whilst I think care should be free for all it isn’t at the moment and seeing FIL happy was worth the cost.
My parents are both over 80 with complex needs and want me and the grandchildren to inherit their house. However, if it gets to the point that they need care then they will get it and the best that we can find and if the house has to be sold to pay for it so be it.
