Thoughts would be appreciated please. I’ve got a very old HP printer which works but drinks ink. Someone has given me a Brother MFC 440CN. It’s old and they didn’t use it. Would you bother setting up the Brother, buy ink, etc? Or just buy a new Epson? My budget is not a problem but I do love reusing something old where it’s sensible!

Printer prices are quite expensive at the moment.  You've been given a multi-function printer for nothing.  The ink for tthat printer is the LC1000 ink, you can get compatibles for peanuts.   It's a no brainer about what to do.  If the Brother works and just needs new ink, you're cooking on gas.  If it doesn't work, you won't be too far out of pocket.
  • Thanks! But what is LC1000 ink? And can I get it easily on E**y?

LC1000 is what that printer takes,  its the printer ink cartridge numbers - LC-1000C, LC-1000M, LC-1000Y and LC-1000BK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black).  Should be available on eBay or Amazon or anywhere you like to buy.

I've had no problems with compatible cartridges from Stinkyink for my Brother printer (a supplier I found on this forum).
Didn't break the bank, and no, I'm not an employee/ owner/ shareholder.

  • Thanks, I will get onto it. Does this mean I need 4 cartridges? (Sorry this is all new to me after 20 ish years of HP20 and 21.)

Well as I've given you the part numbers you need, and there are four of them, that would imply you need four cartridges ;)

    Another vote for stinky ink
    Their warranty is fantastic
I've had free failed ink replacement after 10 months.

You may not need all 4 at the same time. I've been (possibly foolishly) replacing each one as it's used up. Probably ought to buy a set of four and pace myself.
Not sure if they recycle old cartridges. Apparently many do now.

  • A word of warning regarding the Brother printer, it is a very old machine and you say hasn't been used (I guess you mean for quite a while) the printheads will very likely be clogged with dried ink, any ink within the cleaning mechanism, which is basically a pump system that sucks ink through the printhead, will be clogged with congealed ink reducing its' efficiency and on top of this the printhead arrangement is not conventional, the cartridges load from the front of the machine and feed a docking station via pipes, the printhead gets it's charge of ink from the docking station, there is no permanent connection between the cartridges and the printhead, this all works very well on a machine that is in regular use like my DCP-J132W but is a potential failure point on a machine that doesn't get much use and spends most of it's life switched off.   If you can find a very cheap set of cartridges then it may be worth a go but don't invest too much time and money on it, if it isn't printing very well after  running the nozzle clean function half a dozen times, it probably will not get any better.   And yes that machine takes 4 ink tank type cartridges and they are quite generous in the amount of ink in them.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world
