why polystyrene nuggets

hi we had our washing machine disconnected today to go to tip. behind it and going back behind the kitchen sink i have found what i can only describe as polystyrene nuggets!! what are they for? i am pulling them out but it seems endless- what are these for - if anything. many thanks

    Like packaging material?  I've known people to try and use it as insulation. 

    We once removed a random hardboard wall over an original external wall and there was an avalanche as we pulled it back!  ⛄️

    it’s it’s those polystyrene shapes that usually are packed into parcels to prevent damage

    Those might just be made of maize going by the colour (yes, really).

    think they are just discoloured having been there about 15 years and there are loads of them the more i pull out the more tumble down!! weird

    Could have been for noise suppression, I would make sure to remove them all as unlikely to be fire proofed.
