Scottish Nursing Home Dilemma

Hope someone here can offer advice.
My friend owns half of a mortgage free property with his mother, a modest ex local authority property.
Said elderly mother (in her 90s) is going into a nursing home.
My friend, who is 65 is now worried sick they will sell his home (or half the value of it), to pay for the nursing home.
I have absolutely no experience of this - could anyone here shed any light?
Don't try to keep up with the Joneses - Drag them down to your level - it's cheaper .

The value of the home will in this case be disregarded.
