. You're paying them for a service which includes the necessary hardware to enjoy the service. Their kit has now broken and is stopping you from making use of what you're paying them for, so they need to send you a new router.
Actually, this isn't true. You're paying for the service, and you've probably had a freebie router from them at the time you started. They are under no obligation to replace a failing router free of charge (and anyway, most ISP-provided routers are a bit pants, truth be told).

The OP may get a freebie replacement from their ISP if they ask, but they may not.....
Provider not interested. Says we have had a router FOC when we started with their service several years ago.

You haven't mentioned whether you need a router or a modem/router nor whether you are on adsl(+)/or vdsl i.e. do you need a fibre to the cabinet router or just plain old adsl(+) . I would switch if it was me but if that's not your thing then we need more info.

Ah! There’s the rub debitcardmayhem. I don’t know if I need a router or modem/router but it’s definitely only plain old adsl. Current router is Technicolour TG582n. Thanks for your input

Aaah I got one of those from Talktalk years back , consigned it to the tip when 1 week later I bought an ASUS DSL-N55U , sadly I gave that away 3 years ago, you may get one from ebay etc, but I would stiil switch whoever your ISP is. They may just say hey why do want to switch ? you probably cheaper and my router is failing  .....etc.
OH and can you get FTTC where you are ? this will tell you https://availability.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search

Thanks. The link tells me FTTC is available in some parts of the area but is no more specific than that but I’m fairly sure fibre isn’t available in our street. I guessed the router I have was probably not top pick but it has worked w/o problems for years. Now feel a bit stumped should it finally conk out. I guess I could contact isp & buy a replacement from them but it would be with the risk of getting another poor router

Why are you avoiding changing isp?

I don’t want to get into a fixed contract with a company that may have poor performance & have to repeatedly search for deals to replace that contract when it ends. At least I know what to expect from the isp I have. They have always provided reasonable performance & tech support up to now. We have been totally reliant on the internet for banking & online shopping since March 2020. I really was looking for advice about a replacement router to buy. I understand that many others have a different perspective on switching

But you are paying over the odds to XX ISP .
Say who your ISP is then we can point in direction of a router.

Thanks for responding JJ Egan but I think I have made it clear I do not wish to switch at this time & recognise I might be “paying over the odds” but the essence of my original post was about a recommendation for a new router. I am not tech savvy & have tried to provide information about my current router to the best of my ability. I hoped to avoid a debate about switching, which no doubt will lead many to criticise my choice. However, again I thank you for your contribution.
