I'm an an "edge case" too, but by circumstance. My wifes disabilities mean going abroad is impractical so we dont have passports. She doesn't have a driving licence (would be refused on medical grounds) and it is a nightmare dealing with banks who won't accept that a disabled person won't have DL or passport.

Passport is 23 year out of date 😭
I used the post office, during lockdown last year.
Went in on Thursday and had new license on Wednesday.
Counter staff said as soon as they click send with your info it’s in the queue to be printed.

Wow!!!   As soon as spoken, they've arrived in this morning's post.

Valid from 8th, so I'm assuming that's print date, rather than application date.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

Depends how much of a "nightmare" it is, but I expect plenty of people get a passport just for ID purposes - nobody's going to make you travel abroad!

Have you seen how much passports cost?  For my work I need at least 2.

Not just a valid passport, but a valid UK passport.  My wife is an EU citizen with settled status but she had to go the the Post Office in the nearest town to get her license renewed, only to be told "our photo machine isn't working, you'll need to go to <next nearest town>".  A bit annoying, but at least it's only every 10 years.

I'm an edge case as is my mum, both have a full driving licence but both also have expired passports. I couldn't see the point in renewing it as I hadn't any plans (or finances) to go abroad and my licence was my ID anyway.

We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Found this thread as I've the same problem passport ran out a few years ago and we have no travel plans atm, cant renew driving licence without a valid passport unless you go to certain post offices.
  • I have tried to renew my photocard, but discovered that I can't do this online anymore as I have an Irish passport. This means that I have to pay extra and have new photos done etc at post office, which means I have to find an open post office when I am not working! This seems like a really inefficient system that penalises people who don't have a British passport!

How do I apply for renewal of driving licence online as I can't find my passport which is out of date anyway. I'm in my 70's ??
