    I would think 15 years was Long term so how long did you expect to stay ?
    Now you need a bigger house to rent with lots of Landlords selling up and getting out as the Government/Council and people like Shelter making it all most impossible to evict tenants !

    Why not just talk to them? If they've been good, it seems rather unfair to screw them over on a technicality rather than just have a chat. 
    At the end of the day, your specific requirements being hard to find aren't the landlord's issue. 
    And the fact that the landlord doesn't know how to do their job and didn't service notice correctly is somehow the tenants issue?
