It seems the UK's FCO (as was at the time), updated their travel advisories on 25 March 2020 at 18:00.  At this time the advisory was " the FCO advises British nationals against all but essential international travel".   This likely followed from the announcement on 24 March of a 3-week national lockdown in India. The lockdown came into affect at midnight 25 March when a stay at home order was put in place.

Based on the above I would think that most decent travel insurers would pay out against your decision not to travel to India.

That's why you need to claim on your travel insurance.

All quiet from the OP on this.

Thinking now that perhaps the OP did not buy travel insurance for their India trip. This would have I think been the best route for a refund.
