It seems the UK's FCO (as was at the time), updated their travel advisories on 25 March 2020 at 18:00. At this time the advisory was " the FCO advises British nationals against all but essential international travel". This likely followed from the announcement on 24 March of a 3-week national lockdown in India. The lockdown came into affect at midnight 25 March when a stay at home order was put in place.

Based on the above I would think that most decent travel insurers would pay out against your decision not to travel to India.0 -

Thinking now that perhaps the OP did not buy travel insurance for their India trip. This would have I think been the best route for a refund.0
