HMRC cheque to be deposited in

I am a non UK resident currently and i randomly checked my UK personal tax account (online) and boy was i surprised to see that according to HMRC i overpaid tax for the year 2019/2020. Apparently they dispatched the cheque to my foreign address (i updated it online as soon i moved abroad), but the cheque never arrived. They are offering to resend the cheque at a UK address either named for me or named for a nominee.
My question is that if the HMRC cheque is issued in my name and then posted to my friend in the UK, can he deposit that cheque in to my UK bank account?

Which bank is the UK account with? Some will require the person to be in possession of the debit card. Alternatively most banks give an address you can post the cheque to.1

Some banks (possibly the majority) will let another person pay a cheque into someone else’s account just using the sort code and account number. The same doesn’t apply to cash deposits though.1

Ok, its been a while since I physically went into a bank but last time I did they still had deposits envelopes and a postbox if you were happy to use those rather than queue for a teller. Those boxes did take cash or cheques. If they don't accept cash from third parties any longer what do they do if at the end of the day they have a deposit envelope with £50 in it and a signature that is clearly a different name to the account holder who's details are written on the slip/envelope?mab3000 said:

In that case there are two options - you will either need your friend to fill in a paying in slip at the bank (they usually have blank ones) or if the cheque is under £500 and you have the mobile banking app it can be paid in using that if he forwards the cheque to you.taztheman said:

The cheque amount is above GBP 500.

So on that basis, a cheque can be desposited in to my bank account by someone elese (as long as the cheque is addresed to my name)?

Yes, I have done it many times. You will need to give the person your sort code and account number.taztheman said:

I have never been asked for identification. P24 says what to do if someone else is paying in.1 -
I don’t know where you bank but in the 3 different banks I have paid cash into this year, none of them have the option to just put cash in an envelope write the details down and put it in a postbox. I’d imagine this has changed since you last went into a bank, reason being like you said they can’t be certain exactly who is paying cash into an account in this way.Sandtree said:

Is there a reason why HMRC cannot pay the money straight into your UK bank account? My last few rebates from the 'HMRC Savings Scheme' have arrived in my account before I've received the letter telling me it's coming.0

The easy option is to pay it in app, assuming your bank has the function , I've done it 3 times in the lsst year.0
