Refunded twice - 'can't' give the money back

We had flights and accommodation for a trip to Canada booked, that was cancelled in June. We'd booked both through Expedia and paid on credit cards. When the trip was cancelled, we got the hotel refund straight away, but the flights took a few more months to sort. After some chasing with Expedia, we finally got the refund in September - I stress here that at no point did we need to go through the credit card company. The refund itself brought the account into credit because we'd already paid off the balance and hadn't used it for anything, so the credit got transferred into my bank account and didn't think anything further of it.
That was until March this year, when we were considering a large purchase and wanted to see if we had any 0% offers on the credit card. When I looked, the account was showing in credit, of around £850. It turns out, and I confirmed with the credit card company, that following the initial refund for the flights, we received a second refund for the exact same amount in October/November.
We have since made several attempts to try and give this money back, but to no avail. The refund said it was from Virgin Atlantic, and it has a couple of different reference numbers, but when I contacted them, they said the refund wasn't their area and I needed to go through Expedia. I tried to email a couple of times to explain, and each time was assured it was Expedia I needed to go to.
My partner has since rung Expedia directly, only for the person on the phone to get confused about what we were ringing about (they thought we were after a refund from the hotel) and so we asked for a call back that never happened. He then emailed their complaints department (mainly because we couldn't find any other means of contacting them) only to eventually get a response that they no longer have any details about our flights and we need to go to Virgin Atlantic.
I've since sent a further complaint, basically outlining that they've given us nearly £2500 for flights that cost us £850 (in addition to the refund we discovered that our Expedia account also has a credit for flights for £850!!) and that we simply want someone to let us know how to get the money back to them. That was a good 3-4 weeks ago, and we've had no response.
I'm basically stuck now as to what else we can do - we're both well aware that the money is not ours, but no-one seems to be interested. I've also got a credit card that I could close if it were not for this balance, and I don't want to keep it open indefinitely. Has anyone experienced anything similar, either situation or with Expedia themselves, and can please advise what we should do next?
Thanks in advance.

I would just deposit the duplicate refund into the highest paying deposit account with instant access that you can find. At some point either Expedia or the credit card company may realise they have messed up and ask for it back. Until then you might as well earn something from it - just don't spend it.

If you have done what is reasonable in trying to alert said companies then you should put the money/credit aside. Whomever made the error has 6 years in which to take action against you for it's return.0

As others said, you have done what you can.
Put the money aside or just don't spend it as they could claim it back when they realise.
