Collected my new car yesterday. Its on HP finance. Got home and it stinks of smoke. Aired car all afternoon yesterday and all of this morning too, Have sprayed numerous times with febreeze but it still stinks. Its also not been valeted inside very well at all.
My dads been round today, took 1 look, opened the bonnet and said that it looks like all the front panels have been replaced, there's even labels on the newer parts still.

Can I return it based on these?

What age/price of car are we talking about and where purchased from - big difference on recent, premium priced from main dealer with their guarantees vs older/cheaper independent where price reflects the issues (irrespective of whether you spotted those issues when you inspected the car prior to agreeing purchase)

Unless it's been advertised as 'never smoked in/never in an accident' you're going to struggle

Its an 18 plate Skoda Octavia Estate purchased from local dealership. We knew it had been used as a company car prior but were told we could reject it if there was a big issue with it. When I got in it yesterday I said it smelled funny and the sales guy said it would clear with the aircon, there's no way that smell is clearing out. Its also filthy inside. The centre arm rest is disgusting, brown marks all over it yet its dark grey interior, dirt all down the side of seats and there is a fabris wrap around a part in the engine that is covered in animal hair.

Just been to a local garage and they have agreed there is something not quite right. Its been resprayed in parts and we suspect the bonnet has been replaced.

Will be heading back to the dealership this afternoon.

I presume it's not been written off?

Many used cars have had some bodywork done - either on insurance or privately. There's no centralised record kept, only of write-offs.

Minor previous accident damage, properly repaired, is no grounds to reject - and would have been clearly visible pre-purchase. Add in the "animal hair", and it's quite possible it hit a deer or a fox or similar. It happens, frequently.

Would you expect every car that's ever hit a wild animal to be crushed rather than repaired? Because, if not, it's going to be sold to new owners...

Likewise, the smell of smoke in the car was not only obvious pre-purchase, but you discussed it with the vendor before buying...

Thanks everyone, you're confirming my thoughts regarding it. Its on HP anyway and we've only had it a day so I can still say no.
I'll be seeing what the garage say later as its disgusting and they are frankly taking the p***

As for the hair its not from having hit an animal. Its probably from a cat curling up in there keeping warm, there is loads of it.

Was there a reason this wasn't visible when you viewed the car before purchasing?

The car had to come in from Skoda UK and the quick view we had of it showed it looked fine. We were kind of ushered straight in to do the paperwork before hand as I was running late

Is there anything that you have now noticed that wasn't visible when you inspected it prior to purchase?

That's no ones fault but your own.

    So you bought it unseen...?

But not as a distance sale...?
