Sky Internet - Wireless Connection

Evening all,

We have recently switched over the Sky and find cabled connections to be fine but WiFi is terrible. The router is in the same place as the old BT one etc. but we are finding when we connect to the WiFi with phones/tablets, it is so slow most things end up timing out. Sitting NEXT to the router makes no difference either.

Any ideas?

    The Sky routers are crap in the wireless department, they have been for a while.  It'll make a much better doorstop.

    Agreed. We had Sky's rubbish router before and I could barely get a signal in the other room (bear in my we live in a modern jerry-built house with paper-mache walls). Since moving to BT the signal is much better in all parts of the house. If you speak to Sky about it they *might* send you a "better" router which will be just as bad or worse, and then offer you some system that costs an extra £5 a month to improve signal in the other rooms.
    Retired at age 56 after having "light bulb moment" due to reading MSE and its forums. Have been converted to the "budget to zero" concept and use YNAB for all monthly budgeting and long term goals.

    Our {oldish} Sky router works well ..the new one still unboxed.
    You may find it's designed to persuade you to use the higher of the dual bands which your phones/tablets can't accept. Are there any instructions on band selection ?

    Thanks all. 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz are currently set to "Sync settings" and we are only getting a single SSID broadcast.

    We have looked at buying a new router but can't seem to find one with a phone jack connector (white side, not clear side).

    Why are you connecting it directly to the phone line?  It'll work but there's a reason why all the routers have the RJ10 (the square/clear connection to square/clear connection) in the box - it's meant to go to the broadband side of the filter (which plugs into the socket first unless you have a pre-filtered master soecket) and you can connect your telephone (if you have one) to the rectangular connection via the phone jack connector.  That's an RJ11 with the phone jack connector, you can get those from anywhere and if you have an old corded phone you can use those as well.

    Why not connect your old BT router to the Sky one via ethernet, then use it as a router and use the Sky one as a modem i.e. turn off the wireless and one of them to be a DHCP server. I don't know enough about either of the boxes but basically you need to set the sky box as a modem only, and the BT one as just a router. I believe someone on this forum will know how to do this, I know that Sky and most ISP supplied xDSL devices are pants I use an ASUS router but my ISP allows me to use any modem router easily, which I believe is not the case with Sky.

    You can use your own router with Sky if you really wanted to, but you have to jump through hoops to get the details out to reconfigure the router.
    I believe Now Broadband it is a contractual requirement to use their router, although a) that's the same router as Sky with a Now logo on it (so same wifi issues), and b) how that gets policed/enforced is anybody's guess.  I suppose it helps technical support but when the wifi issues are hardware based, little they can do.

    We aren't - the Sky Router we were sent has a phone jack slot which we need to use to have phone access. We are Fibre to the Home.
