Hello All,
Had my renewal from Tesco through the door the other day at a price of £1068.19 for the year. I decided to ring up and "tell a great big white lie" so I said I had a quote of £638 (first number which came into my head), and they asked who from, so the first company that came into my mind was Churchill, and they said they would match it as they are in their group.
I was over the moon.
fantastic.

I do this every year at renewal, play 2 co's off against each other. Saves loadsa money when I'm having to do it for 2 cars and a bike

The original post is exactly the reason why some insurers don't price match.0

I wonder what would happen if Tesco's had asked for confirmation and has OP not just told a 'great white lie' but in fact committed fraud?0

I'm not sure if what the OP did is illegal, but it is certainly unethical. Insurers use complex formulas to calculate premiums for different risks, and if customers were allowed to set their own premiums (which is what the OP has effectively done) then there's a high risk that the insurer won't be able to cover its claims costs and may even go out of business.
I don't work for the RBS Group (which includes Tesco and Churchill) but I must say I'm very surprised that the adviser agreed to drop the premium by such a massive amount without carrying out any checks. I wonder if this is standard procedure there? Where I work, the advisers aren't allowed to price-match with other insurers, but in some cases they can reduce the premium by a certain percentage in order to retain a customer.0 -
Its a wonder they haven't requested proof of renewal premium as part of their price matching criteria... maybe this will become evident when the OP gets their paperwork through...

Every little helps! It is not exactly ethical, but as Tesco hardly set high standards of ethics in dealing with suppliers, well done OP:T :T :T0

When shopping around for quotes I have sometimes been asked by co 2 what co 1's quote was so that "they can verify it before matching or bettering it" Also I haven't ever tried to get such a good deal as the OP did. I just usually knock off say £20-£30 quid, not £400

Maybe if the £638 still falls within their target margin for supplying the policy based on the OP's details, they just match it without too much fuss?
Just speculation...My eyes! The goggles do nothing!0 -
I did this recently with Tesco, but I had a genuine quote from RAC for £245, which was cheaper than the £305 they were quoting me.0

a mixture of comments (those pretending to be legit, some people are so lardy dar.)
At the end of the day, Tesco are not going to go out of business (get real)
cover came through today, and no proof required.
