TalkTalk phone and broadband end 17 June

Options
Our TalkTalk contract ends on 17 June. I'm thinking of going with the Vodafone 63mb offer featured in this weeks MSE Tips email.
But, you need to sign up before 11.59pm on 7 June, ie 10 days before our TT contract ends. How long does it normally take to transition? Will I have to pay a penalty to TT?

Assuming you are happy with your TalkTalk service, I suggest you speak to them and tell them that you intend to switch. Let them know the exact deal you are considering.

In my case they failed to offer a better deal. I then signed up to another provider, and received the usual "Sorry to see your leaving" emails.

I called them back (just out of curiosity) and they offered a deal I couldn't refuse. I currently get 78mb down and 19mb upload, with free unlimited calls for the equivalent of just under £15pm.

If your intent on switching, with a contract end date of 7th June, I'd be pulling the trigger now. From memory, it takes around 10 -14 days to switch. So expect you'll pay a few days pro-rata for the daft out of contract price

Thanks for that. But, you slightly misinterpreted! The Vodafone deal that I'd like to switch to ends at 11.59 on 7 June. Our current contract with TalkTalk does end until 10 days later, ie 17 June. I know it takes a certain amount of time to switch, but if it switched before 17 June, would I face a penalty from TT, and if so, what?

As a general rule the closer to your end date you are the less the exit fee is.  By this point in time you're into cooling off periods which will expire before any work is done to transfer you so in theory you'll be out of contract by the 17th.  Any exit fees at this point will probably only be a few pounds: https://community.talktalk.co.uk/t5/Articles/Cancel-your-TalkTalk-service/ta-p/2204737 suggests (package depending) from £10.20 a month.  So since you're less than two weeks to go it shouldn't be any more than about a fiver.

    Sorry, (late night)
There isn't a penalty as such. I normally leave just before the contract end date to avoid higher charges.

In my experience, the early termination charges amount to the remaining days / months left on your contract (pro-rata). It's been a while since I left TalkTalk, but sky in particular didn't charge the VAT on this either. They will advise you when you speak to them.

I would still test the air with TalkTalk, as they will just change your contract dates to retain you. A bit of gentle goading helps as well. I told the advisor that it would be impossible for them to match the deal I'm leaving for.
