We are off to Stockholm on Wednesday evening (myself, OH, DS1 (5) and DS2 (3)) - any suggestions for things we must NOT miss out on. We are doing Skansen and The Festival of St. Lucia on Thursday; and then have until mid Sunday afternoon ... also any recommendations for restaurants etc. that are not too pricey would be gratefully received, we are staying in a fairly central youth hostel.
Look forward to your replies!

The Vasa Museum - a 17th century ship rescued from the harbour - is well worth a visit and next door to Skansen.I really must stop loafing and get back to work...0

I second the Vasa Museum - stunning, just stunning, and makes the Mary Rose look like something from the wood clearance section of a DIY store.
The Old Town (Gamla Stan) is very pretty. Lots of beautiful buildings with flickering lanterns outside.
I would also recommend the Absolut Ice Bar for a bit of alcoholic fun. It's not cheap in Sweden, but you'll have a great time as the people are so friendly.Next post follows in a moment ...0 -

I third that! It's super. :T Also, I recall it's next door to the Nordic Museum. I wouldn't necessary visit the Nordic Museum otherwise but it's worth a look if you're in the area anyway. It's quite an eclectic mix of displays. When I went (a few years ago now) there was an Abba exhibition, dollshouses and table settings amongst other things.Yeah, whatever. I'm a grown up, I can take it...0 -
Thanks for the replies so far guys, keep them coming! we are staying in a youth hostel so I am hoping we can keep costs down by doing a bit of cooking and prepping lunches, etc. That's Numberwang!0

Another vote for the Vasa Museum, its amazing!!
We also took a boat trip out into the archipelago which was brilliant, saw loads of different wildlife etc, not sure whether this would be viable in winter??
Changing of the Guard at the Palace is worthwhile, cant remember what time it happens (11am-ish?), brilliant for DS1 as I am sure he would like soldiers and horses like most little boys. There is also a museum under the Palace which had rooms about Swedish royal family/history, but also interactive rooms upstairs IIRC for little people, there was a dressing up box etc (me and OH are just big kids at heart!)
I would also recommend a trip on the tram, there are some really unique retro trams which run to Djurgarden which is where Vasa Museum, Nordic Museum and Skansen can be found.
Finally, we also went to the Stockholm City Hall where the Nobel prizes are awarded, but we really went to see the weird and wonderfully decorated rooms inside, and the Registry Office where you can apparently have a wedding ceremony which lasts 3 minutes and is fully legit - me and OH are still considering whether to go there to get married as we totally fell in love with Sweden
I agree with others that it can be quite expensive, but like most capital cities there are places that are far more reasonably priced that the restaurants etc on the main streets etc.
Have fun, I am totally jealous!!

Just remembered that there is a department store on one of the main roads (cant recall the name of the road) but the store was called PUB. I would liken it to a mini-Harrods, but at this time of year they may have some good Christmas displays for the kids. Might be worth a look?

Yes, if you like a tipple it might be worth buying a few bottles airside from your UK departure airport on your way out. Buying alcohol in Sweden is pricey indeed and as I recall you can't just buy it from the supermarket either - they make it as difficult as possible for you to get your mits on a bottle of vino!Yeah, whatever. I'm a grown up, I can take it...0
