Enforced Hotel Quarantine

Until last night's announcement, OP's wife could in theory have used her return ticket back to London, then booked a flight onwards to Portugal as a transit passenger without re-entering the UK, remain there for the 10 days required, and then returned to the UK from a green list country without the need to quarantine? I'm not advocating gaming the system like this either, but it does seem to be technically possible?Penelopa.Pitstop said:Staying for 10-11 days in third country on a way back from Kenya, should be much cheaper than hotel quarantine in the UK. So it's probably best to check where could she fly from Kenya and which country is on a green list. Right now, probably not a lot of choice.
It might be possible to change return ticket with BA to fly to Portugal.
AFAIK, Iceland is now the only only green list destination that is itself accepting UK tourists. No free lunch, and no free laptop

You could but the lists could change at any time and while the UK government can't exactly stop British nationals returning to the UK, a government in an European country is allowed to bar British nationals who have recently been to Kenya from entering which could leave you with a ticket for a flight which you aren't allowed to board.silvercar said:You need to ask locally, what places from Kenya people are travelling to, then match those up to the UK green and amber lists.0 -
I think if you're to be a 'transit passenger' in London then you needed to be accepted for the Portugal flight when you check in prior to leaving Kenya, so if a British national in Kenya doesn't meet the requirements for being allowed in to Portugal then you may not be allowed on the plane to London from Kenya.macman said:

Worth noting many countries now required you to fill in a PLF where you have to list any countries/regions you've been in during the past 10/14 days. If you mention you've been to Kenya then you might find you have to quarantine even if you're flying from the UK. If you lie on a PLF you could be fined or imprisoned, depending on the local law.2 -
Most airlines (excluding the budget carriers) will self-check separate tickets and associated luggage (I've done this when flying Belavia to Warsaw then BA to Heathrow, the airlines had no official links). The rest of this stands completely though.epm-84 said:
