Hi all, after a bit of advice / experiences when making claims for lost or damaged parcels.
A friend recently sold something for £40 on ebay which in all fairness she picked up for £2 from a car boot. Sent signed for as told would cover up to £50. Item never got delivered but Royal Mail say will only refund what she paid for the item on proof of a receipt ie £2 and not the selling price.

Are there any companies people have used which will cover the selling price? I'm going to be sending some parcels soon and if the worse should happen......
Problem with signed for is that it goes with normal mail whereas special delivery is treated separately but even then will they only cover the item cost to me and not the selling cost?

    Many thanks in advance ☺

I'd doubt that your friend has a receipt from a car boot sale so there's a quandary as to what she should be telling RM. They should have to, at least, pay a sensible percentage of the selling price.

I don't think anyone will cover the selling price, no insurance of any kind would, insurance pays out "replacement value". Occasionally that could be the selling price but is usually the cost price.

Hermes will -and do - pay out on the selling price. They require no other "evidence" than the eBay listing reference number as proof. They also refund the courier fee on top.

We actually end up better off financially if Hermes lose a parcel as our eBay prices include P&P.  So we get the selling price, plus their fees (which together equals more than the item sold for) and as we get the variable part of the eBay fees back as well, we pay eBay just the 36p fixed fee.

I understood that RM will pay out on the selling price unless you are a business? I've certainly had settled claims with RM where they've paid out on selling price, just not on the business account.

And that's why you should always wait for someone better informed to come along!
As I understand they only cover up to £20 with possible additional insurance up to £300. They also have a number of exemptions for items that they insure.

Unfortunately for me their exemptions cover basically everything I sell, China, glass, ceramics even resin, plus old jewellery.

I've only claimed from Royal Mail twice. Once I got the full sale price. The other time I got a book of stamps. Can't recall why but think it was very low value item the second time.
