No Standing Charge electricity tariffs in 2021

I am a very low electricity user, so even at a higher unit rate, I would save if I am on a Zero or No Standing Charge tariff.
I was previously with EBICO / Robin Hood, but they closed and I was transfered to British Gas, until July 2021.
I am now trying to find another supplier who offers a No Standing Charge Tariff, but so far I have failed to find one.
Even the MSE Cheap Energy Club cannot offer any such tariff.
Does anyone know of any supplier who currently offers a No Standing Charge electricity tariff ?
Thanks very much for any help.

  • Utilita is the only one I'm aware of.
The big downside is that you need a pre-payment meter.

Just compare with Citizens Advice and 'Which? Switch', entering your annual usage as 1kWh.

Any supplier who offered such a tarriff ended up with all the customers like you, who spend almost nothing. So they got rid of the no standing charge tarriffs.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
  • I'm in the same situation as the OP. Was with First Utility (GRRRR) then Ebico also and now BG want to keep me with a rather unattractive deal.

The comparison sites don't seem to allow a "lowest standing charge" option, has anyone any idea how to work this out other than looking through a gazillion tariffs ?

Just use a comparison site with a consumption of 1kWh.

Gerry1 and Tallerdave are right. Essentially there are no zero standing charge tariffs left. The closest ones come with complicated strings attached.

Using the comparison sites they suggest will find the cheapest for you, standing charge or not.

I was also a very happy Ebico customer with an annual fuel usage of around £120 (for G + E.) My low usage is more about personal philosophy and a green lifestyle rather than saving money - I'm 80% of the way to living 'off-grid' and still aiming higher.

I will be going back to Ebico Living https://living.ebico.org.uk/ when my BG contract ends, even though they won't be the cheapest.

You may as well switch to Octopus as Ebico is now one of its ‘white label’ suppliers. When you do a comparison you will see that the Ebico is in all but name the same as Octopus. Your contract would be with Octopus; Octopus would do the billing, and Octopus provides the customer service.

    Not for me thanks Dolor.

I trust the ethics at Ebico and wish to support them. I joined them when they were supplied by SSE, and stayed with them through Robin Hood until British Gas swallowed their customers.

I repeat "My low usage is more about personal philosophy and a green lifestyle rather than saving money."
    I'm very lucky.
My 'Low Impact' lifestyle is a matter of personal choice. Not forced on me by a lack of wealth or income.

Ebico is non-profit and fights for a fair deal for low income households. It's sad they're a David fighting a losing battle with the Goliath of Big Commerce.

The best Ebico can offer a customer is determined by the best deal they can negotiate with a licensed supplier, in this case Octopus Energy. (I have nothing against Octopus. From what I read they seem like a good company.)

I want to support Ebico in it's lobbying for a fairer deal for poorer consumers and it's ongoing charity work.

    From recent news releases:

Quote: Octopus Energy has announced a white-label partnership with Ebico, providing renewable electricity for its customers.

Ebico – which claims to be the UK’s first not-for-profit energy company – will retain its brand and responsibility for acquiring new customers, with Octopus' role to be in supplying energy to Ebico’s customers and providing customer service. Unquote

I am only posting this as there have been a number of complaints on this forum that Ebico has been unable to provide customer account information from its previous partners. The point is that when people sign up with Ebico the contract they sign up to is with the licensed energy supplier not Ebico. What Ebico does with its partnership fees is a separate issue.

Thanks Dolors, I'm fully aware of everything you say.

Octopus now provides exactly the same facility and services as SSE did originally for Ebico.

When Robin Hood was sold by Nottingham Council to BG all the Ebico (and other White Label partner's) accounts and paperwork came under the control of British Gas. From a trading point of view Ebico ceased to exist when BG assumed responsibility. All the historic Ebico account information is owned by, and is only available from, British Gas. The Ebico offices played no role after the acquisition and transfer. Indeed it couldn't: all the staff were made redundant and the Ebico offices closed. As has also been mentioned in previous threads, all the flack pointed at Ebico since the change over should be directed at British Gas. They have sole control of all the historic Ebico account information, along with Robin Hoods assets and liabilities. I personally know ex Ebico customers who have queried and received Ebico statements from British Gas when they've been in dispute. (Painfully and slowly, but successfully resolved in my friend's favours.) The new 'Ebico Living' has no access to the assets of British Gas and it's unfortunate that many (understandably) disgruntled people do not realize this. The "old" Ebico is now part and parcel of British Gas while the "new" Ebico Living is a completely independent organization - now trading in partnership with Octopus.
