Why is air con not covered by service or warranty in this day and age.
As a part owner of a non-automotive air conditioning company I know something about this. As I think has been mentioned already, compressor shaft seals on pulley driven compressors are a weak point. Also flexible hoses used in automotive A/C can be slightly porous. The problem is worse with some refrigerants (with smaller molecule sizes) than others.
Certainly faults due to manufacturing defects must be covered during the first 12 months (by law). Beyond that it's up to manufacturer's what they cover. I've had A/C failure on both Honda and Hyundai cars during extended warranty period (beyond 1st year) and in both cases the main dealer was happy to check and diagnose free of charge. It turned out to be stone in condenser coil in both cases, so understandably not covered.
