Airtickets

I purchased some airtickets with my credit card back in July 2007 for a flight to be taken in September 2007. Due to bad health I had to postpone the flight until May 2008. I used to my Visa card to pay for the tickets.
The tickets cost £1550 pounds approx.
Today I have read about the airline in question having suspended its shares ...but say's business as normal. The company is called Maxjet.
Google search will show related news articles.
To canel the flight and get my money back would cost me £360.
However if they go bust , will I be able to claim back via the credit card company I paid for the tickets with ? Do they insure you for this kind of thing ?

Should I start to panic ?
To run away will cost me £360 !!!! To stay firm could cosy me £1550 !!!!

Help

Thanks

Yes, you will be able to get your money back as you are automatically covered by the Consumer Credit Act which will jointly hold Maxjet and your c/card company liable if something goes wrong ! It's the law and Teso finance cannot avoid it. This is one reason why I pay for everything via my c/card.
This is not the first time Maxjet have come unstuck, but last time they were able to secure financing to the tune of £50million. It remains to be seen whether they will do it this time.

    Thanks for the quick reply.
    Just hope that Maxjet survive.
I would imagine it would take months to reclaim your money.
Has anyone ever been in this situation ? and how long did the reclaim process take ?

    Thanks

If the worst does happen, you must immediately contact Tesco and speak to the disputes dept. and request the amount is set aside. That way you'll not be liable for any interest charges (if applicable). Then after they have made their enquiries and investigated you should be entitled to a full refund.
Personally I've not disputed such a large amount, but have reclaimed £600 which took approx 8 weeks to settle.

    Thanks for the reply.
I will give Tesco credit card a call in the morning and check the ground Is firm.
At least the future of Maxjet will be known quickly. And if things do go bad , I will have plenty of time to rebook flights prior to my holiday mid May.

    Cheers

As yet you don't have anything to dispute they may not even discuss the issue or you'll possibly come up against a brick wall as general customer service staff tend to know little about the CCA and may give you incorrect advice. Remember it's not in their interest to tell you everything you're entitled to.
Have you tried Silverjet from Luton ? If not they also operate a Business Class only service fron Luton - Newark and are more often than not cheaper than Maxjet or EOS from Stansted.

    Thanks for the advise.
I feel a bit more secure knowing that the credit card will most likely protect me from lose. I will give them a call and if they do stone wall me , then nothing lost.
I will let you know how it all goes.

I can never my life is dull :-)

Got a 10 Month old 42" plasma T.V. gone faulty being fixed Monday morning ...
That incident has paniced me into purchasing an extended warranty. However leaving it 10 months ...I got it cheaper than Currys were trying to sell it for in Feb ...and now the Maxjet panic.
  • I too am waiting to hear about MAXJET.

We did all the "right" things, booked on Skycard credit card (to get the points to reduce next months sky bill), booked through the Tesco Travel website (to get the Clubcard points), then paid off the bill in full when it came through from funds I had won from a PPI reclaim success !!! (MSE Martin for PM I say...)

This was a holiday to Vegas - a one off, hence booked MAXJET , travelling in May 2008. I am absolutely gutted this may now not go ahead. I did cheekily email Virgin airlines asking if they would have any plans in place to "rescue" MAXJET customers, but they replied no (shame....)

Good to know that if things do go belly up, that we will be able to claim a refund from the credit card. Did I read somewhere though, that I am liable for the first £100 of it?

Thanks to all who have posted.

    Goodbye MaxJet.

They have filed for Chapter 11 today.
Called Tesco Credit card to let them know.
They are asking for me to gather information and write to them.
Can see the hoops I will have to jump througth being lined up already

Called MaxJet via a number announced on the MaxJet Web Site and the recorded message said they would make a full refund to my credit card !
Will try to find a direct number and contact them after Christmas to double check this will happen and when. Don't feel confident about this happening !

Now have to rebook my flights with someone else.
Looks like Virgin will get my Business.

You just can't chance the small players at the moment.

Feel sorry for those due to fly today ! or worse those who have flown already and need to get home after Xmas.
