FYI @elsien you shouldn't be using a powerline adaptor on an extension lead.

No I know that's not ideal but it does work and it's  not practicable to run a long ethernet cable between the router and where my desktop is. I have old sockets in my house which are very low down and too close to the floor to have the powerline socket directly into the plug.

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

You can get powerline that have the plug at the bottom and all the rest above.

The best solution is definitely to swap the existing TP Powerline device for one with 2 or 3 ethernet sockets on it. Make sure you get one from the same range (i.e. if your current one is a AV600 then get a AV600, any lower will slow the link down. No point going any higher though (unless it's cheaper) as it won't go any faster than the one connected at the router end). You should be able to get one for less than £20 on eBay, second-hand should be fine. You can easily pair the new device with the existing powerline network and then you can re-use your single-port device in another room or sell it on eBay to recoup some of your cash.
