I had someone out today for a quote which as expected was extortionate. To prove to him that I could not really care and I didn't like his prices I said that I was seriously thinking of letting the house rot (which is true) he said "don't do that you would be surprised at what people buy and can get mortgages on".
Unless survey standards have seriously dropped over the last 40 years since I was in the mortgage business (if anything I would think things are tougher) I very much doubt anyone would be interested.

What's the problem with your house?0

Back door won't open, leaks in roof, in need of a total re-wire, in need of a total re-plumb, in need of new central heating and boiler, most kitchen appliances don't work (needs replacing), no hot water, cold water leaks and has to be turned off at the stop !!!!!!, damp and mould that's just for starters.

(Assuming a standard rectangular door hole, weird roundy bits etc and your quote is probably reasonable).aardvaak said:Back door won't open, leaks in roof, in need of a total re-wire, in need of a total re-plumb, in need of new central heating and boiler, most kitchen appliances don't work (needs replacing), no hot water, cold water leaks and has to be turned off at the stop !!!!!!, damp and mould that's just for starters.
So mentioned the door.Re-wire. £2000 for decent self done. £3000 for surface box cheapo done. £5000 for proper sone.Re-plumb. Depends what's there and how accessible. £2000. Kitchen appliances? £1000. New boiler? Add £2500 to plumbing and maybe get the plumbing bit cheaper. Cold water included in plumbing. Damp and mould? Get heating in first, strip back, let it dry, Keep spraying bleach on the mould. Damp unlikely to be a problem, just a symptom. So £12000 all in? (unless this is some 5 bedroom thing, even then just double it).

Carrot 007 - Thank you for your reply and info, I suspect those prices are for a small to medium house.

You've not said what size your house is.
Get a roofer out to quote to patch it, if possible. That keeps costs down and will also start helping to resolve the damp issues.
Ask several places for quotes to replace your door or if you, anyone you know, are a bit hands on with DIY then buy a door and fit it.
Until you're watertight you can't start resolving the damp issues. Where are the problems and what's on the other side of it?
If you're in receipt of any benefits have a look to see what boiler grants are about.
Why does it need rewiring and re-plumbing?
Kitchens and bathrooms can be cheap, again shop around, pick up ex-display or sale ones. Same with 'white goods'.
If you honestly can't be bothered ask a few estate agents round to price it up, as it stands, and see what you could potentially sell it for. Then see what else you could buy, or rent, with the money.
Also, maybe a chat with the Dr if you're not feeling good about things, not just the house.Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.1
