I breastfed all three of mine until they were quite old - ds3 was fed until he was two. I don't remember any of them biting me with teeth, although I think one or two clamped down with their gums when they were teething.

So you may be lucky like me, or maybe you'll have a really bad memory too. :rotfl:
  • Hi there, my DS is 7 months old and I'm still breastfeeding him. I don't mind at all although he has his first tooth coming through and i'm extremely anxious about being bitten.

I just wondered if anyone knew whether babies do bite down when feeding or if they don't?? He hasn't bitten me yet but the tooth has only just appeared.

BTW i'm trying to wean him but he is just not interested AT ALL - any tips for getting him onto solids would be gratefully appreciated!!!

    Thanks

Hi - i'm still bfeeding my 15 month old daughter and have no plans to stop. she hasn't bit me yet, fingers crossed she won't!!
she didn't really take to solida until i started letting her feed herself. i steamed carrot batons and broccoli and she was happy to munch away on them. moved on to fingers of toast with unsalted butter, and now she will eat absolutely anything.

i bf both of my children who are grown up now. my son was cutting his 8th tooth when i stopped feeding him. have you tried getting someone else to try your baby on other foods? to baby you are breast milk and that is what they want from you, but they may except a bottle/cup or solid food from another person.

I breastfed my youngest until she was around 15 months old (she decided when to stop - well it just gradually happened over a period of about two months and I was guided by her).

She bit me twice. The first time was a real shock so I mentioned it to my health visitor, who advised me to take her off straight away (it is such a shock, I couldn't actually do anything else if I'm honest!) and put her down in her pram or just turn my face from her.

I only had to do that once - she never bit me again.

She kind of nibbled a few times but that is only what bottle fed babies do to the teat when they are getting fed up. It's just a sign to finish the feed.

I believe she was about 10-11 months when she bit.

Pureed pear or apple is good for starting to wean, or the organix 100% pureed fruit for stage one is a great standby. (They're in little plastic pots of 4, next to the jars.)

As for biting, my first started teething at only a few weeks old and I fed him for 18 months and DS2 is 11 months with lots of teeth and I'm still feeding him. A calm, firm no and moving away gets the message across and it's no big deal. DS1 drew blood once though which wasn't fun but it was only once and it was worth it for me to persevere, financially as well as for convenience.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.

I've fed all of mine past a year and my youngest is now almost one and I'm still feeding her. She has bitten me twice. Both times I yelled (it hurt!) and she got very upset so now I think she got the message. Like someone said above if baby bits push him into the breast so he'll let go to breathe.

Weaning can take ages so try to not worry if after a few weeks your little one is still only having one mouthful at each meal. Baby led weaning is very popular nowadays where baby is given a selection of finger foods to try and controls themselves what goes in their mouth. I did a mixture of traditional purees and baby led with my daughter from 6 months old, it took us a good 2 months or so to get her to eat a good sized portion and another couple of months on top of that to get her eating three meals a day. There really is no rush as long as baby is getting plently of milk. This is a good site http://babyledweaning.blogware.com/

Oh and none of my babies ever had a bottle, they went straight from breast to cup starting with water at 6 months and then onto cows milk at 12 months. Some breat fed babies take to bottles easily but others are much more stubborn so a cup is usually the way to go.

    Loopy x

I was going too suggest Baby Led Weaning too as above.

Don't be to worried about rushing it as your breastmilk is nutritionally complete for them until around 12 months.

    Good luck
  • Hi thanks for all your advice.

I've relaxed a bit about the biting issue as most people have said that after the first time, if dealt with properly, it dosn't seem to happen again - so i'll try when it happens.

I've also started to to offer food that he can hold as well as a spoon and he is more interested in it- so I think that is the route to take there as well.

Glad to hear breastmilk is nutritionally complete until 12 months, as he is def getting more of that than anything else, i just thought he would wean quicker than this, as he won't take a bottle, (and also cos i was worried about being bitten) so to take the pressure off me a little - but hey ho if it's not to be it's not be.

    Cheers again.

hi,as someone who fed 3 babies until past 4 (not for everyone,i know) i found a firm "no" and removal of breast usually did it.
Baby led weaning is not for everyone, but i loved my years of breastfeeding....and they all turned out wonderful....even the first one who only got breast milk for 8 weeks (thanks to the helpful (ha ha) advice of my mother....nuff said)
