Breast Feeding discussion

hi, i used an electric pump without much problem BUT what i found invaluble was breast shells. they was just the most amazing invention ever. i used to be able to collect the drips and collect about 6oz from a shell without any effort at all and freeze it. they saved getting soaking wet all day too.
what i also used to do once my milk was really established-and this isn't for the faint hearted- is to express the same time as feed. it came out like water from a tap. mulit-tasking at its best.
the midwife did say its a shame i didn't have twins though, i think i had so much though was because DS was 9 1/2 ilbs born and HUNGRY.susiesue

Hi there, my DS is 7 months old and I'm still breastfeeding him. I don't mind at all although he has his first tooth coming through and i'm extremely anxious about being bitten.
I just wondered if anyone knew whether babies do bite down when feeding or if they don't?? He hasn't bitten me yet but the tooth has only just appeared.
BTW i'm trying to wean him but he is just not interested AT ALL - any tips for getting him onto solids would be gratefully appreciated!!!
Thanks0 -
My eight month old bit me twice......that's when I switched to bottles I'm afraid.
Ref the feeding.......what have you tried?"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
Mt son got his first tooth at 4 months or so i fed him until he was over a year, he bit me once but as i screamed (it was sore and a shock!:o ) he a scare too and never did it again.0

If he does bite, take him off and say No firmly and turn your head away from him. This worked for my three and I breastfed them all past their 1st birthday (lots of teeth by then!)0

I also switched to bottles once I was being bitten on! Those little teeth are sharp when they come through! I just thought it was like a natural stepping stone telling me my job was done.
I know lots of other mums who breastfed up to a year, but I never actually asked how they got over that hurdle! I'm sure someone will be along shortly with lots of good advice for you.
With the weaning onto solids, I guess it's perseverance, and just a little at a time. He just needs tastes of things at the moment, so a little of what you're having, pureed, and expect lots of playing with it and spitting out for the first while. Eventually he'll start developing an interest!
Best of luck.I'm an adult and I can eat whatever I want whenever I want and I wish someone would take this power from me.

Hmm, yes, i have a feeling I'll get bitten soon.
I know lots of people succesfully feed for along time - do they not get bitten?? or just get used to it?????
I tried bottles over Xmas - he just screamed, he won't take a dummy at all just wants to be latched on. I might try the bottles aagain, i know you have to persevere.
I tried baby rice to start with formula milk, but no luck there, then tried it with a little expressed milk still not interested. I've tried pureeing apples, pears and mashed banana with a little milk but not that keen on those either! I then bought some Heinz breakfast powder (fruit and yoghurt) that you mix with water and have been a little more succesfull - ie i've got a couple of spoonfuls in but still not what i would hope for. He will suck on a rusk though.0 -
Thanks for the replys - i'll definatley try the saying no and turning head away if / when it happens.
Thank you0 -
Hi there,
I managed to bf our youngest until she was 11months and 3 weeks... she was fine up until around 10 months and then did bite a few times tbh the fright you get when it happens is the worst bit (sorry not much help!)
Anyway I was in visiting my gp and mentioned it to them and they suggested that I should just switch over to cows milk - although I really missed feeding - I didn't miss the occasional surprise she would give while being fed!!!
On the other hand my mum bf me until I was 16 months and swears blind I never bit her once :A
Again with our youngest they recommeded weaning at 6 months (instead of 4 months with the other 2) it took longer for her to take to it but once she did there was no stopping her...
I think I started her on runny porridge - just a couple of spoonfuls before her 1st feed - after sleeping all night she was very hungry when she woke up!
Good luck and try not to worry too much - but if you are really concerned and switch to formula then don't beat yourself up managing to bf for 7 months is a brilliant start for your lo!0 -

You sound like you're doing everything right. I used to buy the jars of pureed apples or other fruit (couldn't be bothered to puree my own for just two spoonfuls) and just stir a little milk into them. Sometimes it's all to do with particular tastes and sometimes it can be texture. I'd keep persevering......babies become ready at different times. I think my youngest was only ready at about 7 months where my eldest was wolfing down food at four months old.
