    Yes we did but they weren't interested as it is out of guarantee. I suspect it's not worth fighting them on this as they would only be able to offer a partial refund.
    I have looked online for repairs but it needs specific parts which are discontinued (the factory has ceased production) so it's not easy.

    Just to clarify as well, an inherent fault is one which was present at the time of sale but not necessarily apparent at the time of sale. So if a capacitor had been poorly soldered, it might work fine for months/years then fail. 

    Likewise the retailer can request you prove your claim (this is ordinary position of law, that the burden of proof lays with the party relying on the claim/term) and this is ordinarily done via independent report but they have no entitlement to demand an independent report. A civil court works on balance of probability. So the retailer should bear that in mind, before making any demands as to what form the evidence should take.
