Can somebody please try and explain exactly how to get the search to work.

The new search started off being great, put in a keyword or phrase (inverted commas could help), select the category eg Competitions Time, choose Search Subcategories and/or the other two as needed, choose Threads and/or Replies and Polls as needed, choose time period to search with Date Within (from 1 day to 1 year) of Now (type in search start point, I usually want to work back from Now) and go. Loved it when if first came out but every time the programmers fiddle with the site it breaks in weird and wonderful ways to the point where it is often totally useless. When it works it is good but you can't rely on that from day to day. Whoever is programming this site is incompetent; a Search function is such a basic thing and has been well understood since programming began.
Welcome back BTW, hope you hang around!1 -

If you start from my post here,https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/78252779/#Comment_78252779, and read the rest of the thread, it may give you some idea of the extent of the current problems with search. Included in that will be a post from MSE where they say they are working on the problems.
I have also posted on a different thread with my suggestions as to how I am currently using search

@JamboDP Not sure if you are yet aware that there is now a "Sort" function where the main board can be sorted in different ways including by Closing Date.
The Closing Date field is supposed to be a mandatory field which is completed with the end date when posting a new comp. I say "supposed to be" because some people do manage to post without entering one. This date, which is only visible/accessible to the OP when posting/editing, is used by the sort function when sorting by Closing Date. It is also used to help with moving expired comps to Game Over. At 23:59 on the Closing Date entered, the thread will become Closed. During the next day, a BG can use the Sort function to find all the Closed threads and move them to Game over.
This function can also be an aid to searching in that you can sort the board by Closing Date (which should be the same date as the End Date in the title) and then check through the end dates of the comp you want to post. This is nowhere near as good as a properly working search and is not entirely reliable. I have noticed that a comp can "go missing" for a while and there is a lot of irregular overlapping from page to page.
Not ideal as a search replacement but better for end date comping than trying to search by end date.
I have previously posted how to use Sort, here: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/78252791/#Comment_782527912 -

Hi Jambo, welcome back.
Due to a current fault, note that a search does not include terms in the URL.
So try to use a search term that must be in the title or answer of a post.
The starting point I use is...
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/search?adv=1&search="nikwax"&cat=72&subcats=1&discussion_discussion=1&within=1+month&date=today
...and make good use of varying the "date within" field (eg. "1 week" is best for a newly posted comp, "1 month" for general use, and only go further back if absolutely necessary)
