Any advice please on cleaning a really, really grimy oven...it hasn't been cleaned for a long time and it's caked in dark, thick grease. I've tried a couple of products bought in supermarkets but they didn't touch it!

Mix a paste of bicarb and vinegar and coat the oven thickly.
Leave overnight and then rinse it all off with lots of hot water.
You could do the same thing with a paste of biologial washing power and warm water if you do not have enough bicarb or vinegar."This site is addictive!"

I use something called ovenpride. It's in a box and I get mine in Wilkinsons or HomeBargain for £2.99. Have seen it slightly dearer in other supermarkets.
Anyway, it had a bag, and a tube of gel type cleaning stuff. You put all the shelves etc in the bag and put the cleaner in and leave it overnight.....it comes up so well.
Anyway, you can also use the cleaning solution on the oven, so might be worth getting two boxes and using one for the shelves and one to smother the oven with?
They do a spray version, but I'm not sure it's as good as the Gel.

Lakeland do one called something like Oven mate, which is the best oven cleaner I've ever used.0

Definately Ovenmate from Lakeland is the best thing I have used, but not cheap at £8 a bottle(might have gone up now) , also use ovenpride with the bags for the racks, leave both over night and results are great. Not a nice job though eh?0

Sorry, just checked meant to say Ovenmate. Buy double pack from Costco for about £8.00 plus VAT, last ages. Have seen in Kleeneze leaflets that come through door but you are paying more. Worth every penny.......0

You could also put your shelves in a black bin liner, use gloves and add a small amount of household ammonia, buy at the chemist, tie the top and leave overnight. Open VERY carefully next day ( for the fumes ) and the grease will clean off easily. I have done this and it works. It is probably one of the ingredients in Ovenpride.
I usually steep the shelves in the bath if they aren't too bad, in hot water and detergent.0 -
Before applying anything, place a roasting tin on the bottom shelf, half-fill with boiling water and washing up liquid. Turn on the oven to about 150° and let the water boil. The steam should ease some of the caked on grime off the walls & floor. You can mop that up with a cloth leaving just the stubborn stuff to deal with.Warning ..... I always use ovenmate from lakeland, Its wonderful stuff for getting your oven really clean, just be sure to wear rubber gloves when you use it as it does burn if you get it on your skin0
