When you close a Barclaycard credit card, “you can never have one again”

I've had 2 Barclaycards over my lifetime, so it's not true that you can't get two ... but I suspect I got the second because it was around 10 years after the first so they might not have still had a record of the 1st card (which was defaulted and closed by them).

Barclaycard have been doing the covid limit reductions, so it might just be that they're really tightening down on their lending at the moment.
I'm in a similar position, I had a barclaycard for 10 years (ish) and then closed it to reduce temptation. a few years later (7?) I decided I should get a credit card for holidays and purchases with the extra protection and opened another Barclaycard - that was probably a decade ago, so well before the current restrictions.

This is definitely something new, as I remember barclaycard used to tell people to cancel and reapply in 6 months, if you wanted better BT/MT offers.

I think it was false advice from a service advisor who just wanted to get rid of me. It may be they don’t want me as I paid off my 0% bt card in full.

Does seem that Barclays are restricting their credit card availability as well as reducing many existing holders credit limits and their minimum payment amount is increased to 3.25% which makes a 0% balance transfer much less appealing. At the same time they are one of the few banks still putting their cards on top cashback and Quidco to get new customers.
My latest enquiry on chat has elicited that they only have limited access to information and to phone a supplied 0800 number.
Which is where I came in as it was not available and I was referred to the chat facility.

Old account closed as at end of 0% balance transfer period, all paid off and believed have to wait six months before applying again. Did so for another 0% balance transfer card and turned down said already have a barclaycard. Which I don’t.

In historical terms you did. You may have closed the account but the record still exists. Most likely a commercial decision to block a loop hole that people have been gaming.

I closed a Barclays Platinum card because the period of fee-free usage abroad had ended.  I applied for the Barclays Rewards card which is about as good as it gets (no annual fee and no charges abroad, even when withdrawing cash from ATMs) and 0.25% cashback on purchases everywhere.  However, the online application always rejected me without any explanation.  Eventually after various broken promises (e.g. that it took three months to close down the old card) they eventually admitted that you have to wait six months.
Can't really see the logic in that, because if I'm profitable now then I was when I first applied.
But at least you haven't been singled out, seems they're equally stupid towards everyone.
I didn't close mine. I logged into my account and switch from one type to another. No credit check, same limit.

OP I think the majority from what I’ve read is it’s 6 months after closure.

Is it possible you are still within that 6 months? Maybe it’s worth leaving a few more months if you are set on BC.

What you have been told by the member of staff at Barclays is incorrect. You can definitely reapply for a Barclaycard after 6 months of the old one being closed, and acceptance is subject to their lending criteria at the time. When in November did you cancel the card? I’d maybe wait until the first week of June and do a pre application check then.

For those who have mentioned that they hold more than 1 Barclaycard. Until a few years ago you could apply for a second Barclaycard if you already had one, but they changed this so that you couldn’t apply for a second one. If you already had multiple Barclaycards before they made the change this wouldn’t have affected you.

I think I may have been one week short of waiting six months which might count as ‘still having a barclaycard’. I wanted £20 TCB for opening the card but it didn’t track anyway! And with 3.25% min payments made it less appealing. So with all that I think I will forget barclaycard for now.

Thanks yes I thought it was wrong. Their chat facility is well meaning and polite but they don’t seem to be able to sort anything out in real time and then when you leave the conversation they just drop it when they are supposed to follow through and post a reply.
Trying to find out the actual reason for decline, it was initially referred, is like banging your head against a wall.
I was a week early for the six months wait period although I don’t  think I’ve read that as an official stipulation?

TBH 6 months for a new introductory offer is quite brief if that is what they operate, Nationwide stipulate 12 months and Amex stipulate 24.

Go from the "Settled" date that appears against the account on your credit file, rather than the date on which you actually paid off the card and asked them to close it.

I mean, it's too late now anyway... Given you've already applied and been refused I'd suggest not trying again for a minimum six months.
