nursery advice please

we have a 'parents evening' on tuesday at chops' nursery and have a couple of things that we wish to bring up but im not sure wether they should be brought up and how to do it....

1. when she joined the nursery it said on the form 'which name would you like your child to be known as' so i put 'charlie'. however they insist on calling her charlotte (her name on her birth cert but everyone calls her charlie). i have mentioned it before and i always call her charlie but they still refer to her as charlotte.

2. they send home a newsletter each month and it always has a list of upcoming childrens birthdays. chops has been left off the list for this month (birthday next week). now this has miffed me a bit but im not that bothered but mr mob iis livid.

would you mention these things? or do they seem petty?

If your DS knows both her names I wouldn't bother but I'd certainly want her birthday recorded on the list.

thanks. i thought maybe that there was another child called charlie in her 'class' (this is a daycare facility not pre-school nursery) and thats why they call her charlotte but after receiving a copy of the christmas card list i find this isnt the case.

the only other person to call her charlotte is her great grandad, and you know some grandparents can be set in their ways. we hardly see him though as we live far away.

i call her charlotte only if she is being naughty.

thankfully she does answer to both names but it just bugs me that i specifically requested they call her charlie.

Once she starts school she will be referred to as Charlotte by her teachers. I wouldn't mention it.

Mention the birthday list....but it's certainly not something to get even remotely miffed about (and certainly not"livid"?)

My son is know by his shortened name, but it was explained to me that they will always use a full name to prepare them for school. This doesnt explain why they bothered to ask you, then ignore you though..

I would only be bothered about the birthday if it ment my son missing out on something. ie do they do birthday songs or a special event at nursery that he would not get as a result of being missed off the list. If this is the case, i would ring them and tell them straight away, if not, then there's no harm done and your daughter need not even be aware she was overlooked.

i think mr mobs 'livid' as we are paying a lot more at this nursery than we were with her last one. this is one of a chain nationwide compared to the old one which was a one off church hall jobby who werent exactly doing what they were supposed to with the '0-3 curriculum' (whatever its called)

My son is also known by the shortened version of his name but on 'official forms' I always write his full name. Because his name is then taken from this offical list it means he appears as his full version on things like his peg at school and the school dinner list etc. As for the birthdays that happened at my daughter's nursery, it was just an accident it got missed and the nursery owner was apologetic and pleased I'd told her, so they knew to sing happy birthday etc to her.
  • Just thought i'd post my opinion. I have similar "issues" with my daughters nursery. My daughters name is Faye, yes it's not common but it's not massively unusual but the nursery carers seem totally incapable of grasping her name. It's not Freya, Faya or Fayder but Faye....I know this is not the point you were making but if you have asked for your childs shortened name to be used I would expect them to carry out your wishes. As for their full name being used at school this isnt the case, you can be "known" and anything you like.

The birthday thing i would have a real problem with, they should have her details the same as all the other childrens and providing she hasn't just been enrolled i would expect for them her to be on it. Afterall, whats the point of the list if all the children aren't on it?

I know it sounds like im making a big deal out of reletivley small issues but it's these small things that are important to our children and make them feel comfortable and included.

So, all in all I would definately mention them :o
  • What's in a name? not a lot but sometimes you get a child's name into your head and you can't get it out.... As a teacher though, I did draw the line at calling a child 'Bitzie'!! Still, in the same class I had two Autumns, a Summer, an Ocean and a Skye!

Leaving your child's name of a birthday list I would've thought was an oversight.

Probably best to mention both in jokey sort of way to ensure good communication and relationship.
  • I would mention it. I am also a teacher and we will call the children by what ever name the parents/child wish. That is how life is. I see the name as the issue, not the birthday, which is probably an oversight.
