Parkdean Cancelled My Sun Hols Booking

Just wondering if anyone can advise..
I made a sun newspaper £9.50 booking at a caravan park, after much searching for certain dates/parks etc. I couldn't get any of the  cheaper ones so ended up with a cost of £84 booking, as opposed to £38. It was confirmed and I knew that I still had to pay for the service charge and any optional extras.
I had a couple of stressful weeks, health then phone broke so had to replace and as hol drew closer, I wanted to check details on if I could check in earlier as it was a better grade caravan. When I went onto the booking, I couldn't get in, then checked my email and saw one saying that it had been cancelled due to non payment, this was a few days before I was meant to go. In my head I had thought I had paid up for everything, I know I messed up but I really had assumed I'd paid it but at the same time, couldn't understand why I hadn't been notified about the amount owed and given the chance to pay it. I contacted them straight away explaining my error but asking why they hadn't contacted me. The reply was informing of the fact that there was no longer  any promotion allocation left for that date now, and all monies paid to the Sun are non – refundable as per the Sun’s terms and conditions, but as a good will gesture from Parkdean Resorts can rebook your holiday at the direct price on our website and transfer the £84.00 prepayment paid to the Sun initially. I checked and the only somewhat affordable booking available was around £100 more but no indication of how to book etc as no code given to pay minus my original payment. I asked for further assistance but didn't get a reply for days after. I had also asked for them to check what attempts they had made to notify me of that original outstanding balance. It took days again for them to reply that I could try a different park on a different date, but nothing about the info I had requested. I've asked to be forwarded to someone in management and the reply that I was sent was basically saying that they allowed 6 days for payment before closing it down.
Am I wrong in thinking that they should've contacted me, via telephone or letter,  or even an urgent email? I know they've said that I can transfer the money over, which I do appreciate, but the prices on their website are so expensive so it looks like it's either I have to pay over an additional £300 min for a weekend, or lose my initial £84 payment.  They have also still not advised on how I make the booking either and have basically told me that they don't want to hear any more about the matter.
I have booked the sun hols and stayed at Parkdean many times over the last 20 years...I am so disappointed for myself and my daughter on missing out but for a company I trusted and loved, I feel so let down by them.

Sorry for the huge post above but I've just been trying to find more info myself online and came across the link below. This lady has experienced almost the identical problems as myself and also in her post referred to this as a scam and affecting many people? I'm not saying that it's a scam but if this is happening to others, surely this isn't acceptable for a large company such as them to operate?
Just realised that I can't post a link unfortunately, but it's on Trustpilot under the heading of, Parkdean Holiday Scam by  Victoria

I can’t understand how you are trying to put the blame of a problem of totally your own making on someone else.  By not paying you broke the contract conditions.  I think they are being exceptionally generous in allowing you to transfer the money to another holiday.

That's a fair comment and yes an error on my part initially, but I wasn't even given any forewarning that this may happen and only 6 days after a booking confirmation, I feel is unfair. I wasn't given any chance  to rectify it.

I needed to pay £22.50 extra for the gas/elec and then there were optional extras for passes and linen which I wouldn't have wanted.
