Parter moved out what can I do

Options
Hi my partner has moved out and the TV broadband package is in his name. The contract is with virgin and doesn't expire till march 2022. The split wasn't exsctly amicable and I have no means of being able to speak to me ex. Is there anyway I can cancel it? I'm still paying for it too.

As it's in his name, you could just stop paying it and leave him to deal with it, although no doubt letters and calls would still come to your address.

You won't be able to formally cancel it or change any details on the account.

You can cancel the direct debit at any time; it's your ex's responsibility to deal with the consequences of you no longer paying for his TV and Broadband.

You can always call virgin and explain that the named accout holder no longer lives at the address and you'd like to take out services in your name there.

That is, if you did want Virgin services at your address still. If not, just cancel the DD and be done with it. If they write, return the letters advising "Not known at this address".

If you can get half decent internet from anyone like Zen though take that instead as VM are an absolute shower when it comes to customer service or resolving any kind of account issues.

I wouldn't cancel the DD if it is in your name at your bank and your address because regardless of circumstances the debt will be registered against your bank account and credit reports not his, you will be the one getting CCJs and a bad credit record not him

I would take NLs advice & try to speak, or maybe write? to Virgin explaining and seeing if they can advise a way out, maybe you will be stuck with Virgin but wiht lower cost / service perhaps?

In whose name is the contract - his alone or joint names?

If his alone then when you call virgin you do not need to swap it to your name or take out a new contract or anything - unless you want to. Simply notify them of their customer (you ex)'s new address if you know it. Also you have no obligation to continue paying for someone else's contract

If in joint names then you are jointly and severally responsible for everything

Even in the unlikely event that the OP has the ex-partner's payment coming from their account - the bad debt will follow the person taking out the cable connection not the payment account. Also, Virgin won't easily speak to the OP due to data protection concerns.

The easiest option is actually to place a new cable order (even just for broadband) and that will cancel the existing setup automatically.  That assumes you want some type of service from them going forward.

Well you have learned to be more choosey who you select as a partner going forward.
As the virgin package is in his name cancel your DD and inform virgin of his new address and that he no longer resides at the address where broadband and tv is being supplied by them. Should be ok as far as I can see.

I suggest you get a message to your ex saying that you will no longer be paying the DD and that, unless he contacts VM to end the contract, then he will be getting  late payment marks and eventually a default on his credit record. If he has any sense then he'll get it sorted, even though he will be hot with a substantial ETC for the remaining 9 months on the minimum term. Can you not make use of the account until that time?
You can ignore comments suggesting that you will be liable since the bank account the DD is on is yours, not his. The person named on the VM account is the only person legally liable.
In the meantime, you can if you wish apply for a new service in your name with your chosen provider, effectively as if you had newly occupied the property.
