As far as I can work out the only free route now is by calling the phone lines if you have this free as part of your package? The online entries are now paid for and not free. And does this apply to all radio station competitions from now on? Can someone confirm please?1 -

You can enter this competition online using the form above, by texting the word ROCK to 64100 or by calling 0330 880 4629. A single online entry costs £2. Texts are £2 plus your standard network rate. Calls are charged at the standard rate.
If you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours

"Free" is bandied about a lot (term is easier to use) but the requirement is that there is a no additional cost beyond the basic charge for using the entry route available - the competition cannot make money from these entries hence second class post, local call charge (doesn't matter if you pay for a package to get the calls for zero cost or not) etc.
As Bauer have tested this route already it is likely they will use it on most/all pay to enter competitions in future (ITV tried postal for a few competitions before switching over) I think Global, the other main radio group, don't have a zero added cost (free) entry route.
What matters is maximising paid entries vs the cost of handling the "free" ones - It costs ITV more to handle postal entries then web ones but presumably enough people switched to pay rather than post to make it worthwhile (and many just stopped entering). There will be some added cost to Bauer to run the local cost phone number but presumably the additional cost is worthwhile (like ITV they cannot realistically have a paid web entry route and have "free" entries that way as well)3 -
Silence using EE phones
I am on EE and I was getting silence after dialling the 0330 number, even though the call had clearly connected OK. After looking around the EE forums I found the following worked for me and allowed competition entry.
I am using Samsung/Android but others will be similar.
Press the “phone” icon to bring up the “Phone” app, click the three vertical dots to bring up the menu and choose “Settings” then turn on “Wi-Fi Calling”.
Turn on wi-fi on your phone to connect to your local network.
Call the competition line.
You can turn off “Wi-Fi Calling” when you have finished
Explanation - With this setting your call is going from your handset through your internet connection using w-fi, rather than directly over the cellular network to the nearest phone mast. Its purpose is for times when you are somewhere that has poor phone signal strength, but wi-fi is available. The call will be shown as a wi-fi call on your call lists etc using one of the following icons:
