Hi all,
Looking at painting a feature wall Dulux Sapphire Salute.
12.5m2 Wall
is Dulux or Johnstone’s trade worth the extra price above the ‘retail’ paint?
Any brands preferable?
Matt finish
thanks

I use trade paint because it's thicker and generally requires less coats.
I normally use Dulux for walls and Johnstone's aqua for trim.2 -
These people asked the same question ...

Thanks all.
I have decided on a colour. The Littlegreen Intelligent Matt emulision is £53 for 2.5 L or a Johstones Trade Durable Matt is £48 for 2.5L. Any one have any experience on the quality comparison between these 2?0 -
I bought 'retail' sandtex masonry paint from Screwfix - painted a whole wall one late Autumn afternoon at about 2-5pm. At around midnight it rained very heavily - and when I came down the next morning, all the paint had been washed off (even though the packaging mentioned that it would be ok after an hour or something similar - I can't remember). I sent off a complaint to Sandtex based on the fact that it would be rainproof in a short time, and it wasn't, and they had someone call me back a couple of days later to apologise, talked me through why it might have happened, and offered to replace it via the local Crown professional decorators centre with the 'trade' version.
On visiting the trade centre and putting my voucher on the counter, the staff asked me why I'd complained - and I explained. They said that the trade paint is absolutely miles better than the retail version - that although they list similar specs, the trade version takes a lot more punishment, lasts a lot longer, and has more protective qualities within it. When I painted the wall again, it didn't wash off. So, watching those two guys in the video laughing about there being no difference, I think there is, but the paint companies aren't exactly good at communicating it. Part of the price they paid of course was having the paint mixed on demand - if it REALLY was the same paint - why would the pro's buy it at twice/three times the price of retail paint? and why don't they buy the retail paint ?
Next time I need paint - I'll be buying the trade versions.0 -

Having watched the video (took a couple of days to get through the 45mins!) I'll switch the buying retail dulux.
I tend to get the dulux trade as I have access to a good deal on it, but the retail is obviously still a lot cheaper than good-deal trade.
I've not noticed a significant difference, and if it takes the a 45 minute video to explain the difference, they must be pretty minor differences.0 -
I have bought cheap value white paint before and it discoloured very quickly so that has put me right off cheap paint. Our decorators were using Dulux trade paint and now we have taken over we have continued using it, don’t particularly like paying the extra cost of the trade paint, but at least we are saving on decorators who would cost us around £140 per day. Made a bit of a school day error the other day and didn’t mix our satin white trade paint properly at first, it was like condensed milk until it finally clicked that it needed a proper mix0

I always use Crown trade now. Their scrubbable matt is excellent and much more durable than retail scrubbable paint. My local crown shop will mix to any colour including dulux, F&B etc. I'm only a diy customer but they always give me at least a 20% discount. A 5 litre tin of scrubbable matt mixed is around £40 with discount I think.1

Thanks Rob - Contacted my local centre, veru helpful and gave 17.5% off the Scrubbable Matt.
