We often use brown parcel paper to wrap gifts, we are lucky in having an A3 printer so DF designs some text to cover the paper and we print it out, it looks pretty cool too. We use ribbon or rafia to tie.
    Some good ideas here.

I saw once some wrapping paper that contained wild flower seeds - you put the paper into a container and let them sprout (honest I hadn't been drinking or anything!:D ) I'm sure it was an American site it was on - does anyone know if you can get this in UK or perhaps I should just try and make my own?
  • You weren't drinking!!!! ;)

I found this site with papers and seeds, I only did a google search for paper seeds

Wow - I love the idea of seeded paper!

Can someone confirm that Gift wrapping paper is definetly not recyclable? I thought it was and put it in my recycle bags last year - as did everyone else in the street by the look of it!

As for buying brown paper, I know staples sell it, and I bought some green parcel paper there about a year ago.

I only discovered last year that Xmas paper isn't recyclable, I got a notice from the council telling us not to put gift wrapping paper into our bins. Because it has a high plastic and/or foil content in it it is not recyclable. Some papers aren't recyclable either, the ones that have like a plastic coating on them, when you try to rip them you can see the plstic coating coming out and it's really hard to tear.
The Yellow Pages isn't recyclable either, you shouldn't put them in your normal bin because it has a very high ink dye content, they can be recycled at special facilities, there are special bins near supermarkets that usually have a sticker saying that they will accept books and phone books. (I'm not sure but I think they are some kind of charity that gives money to Great Ormond Street Hospital).

Weird, our school had a special initiative, we had to rip the front page off our old yellow pages and put it in the recycling bin, sign the front page for my son to take to school to prove we had recycled it. The school that achieved the most recycled YP's won an award. They took it too, so not sure whether different local authorities accept them and some dont?

Maybe, I'll call the council tomorrow just to check what they say this time around! :)
