Got item back today.  What else are you expected to do when buyer sends it back anyway when case closed and threatening they will go to paypal.

Picture of item was perfect,  M&S brand new with tags, size correctly given and you wouldnt have mistaken it for smaller even if you had not read the description. They said they thought it was hand size for a baby???

Anyway, I have agreed to refund original cost plus first postage but to be honest i feel like taking my fees out of that but I know it will cause more problems. We live and learn!

You could refund without fees but as long as you know the buyer can then reclaim the rest via Paypal.  It depends if you want to make matters worse or just draw a line under a stupid buyer experience.

I'd be tempted to ring eBay and ask for a fee refund. They've done this a few times when we've had difficult buyers.

I once had a return request on a £280 item due to change of mind. It was a computer SSD enclosure, which had a built in fan. Buyer was expecting silent operation and did not like the sound of the fan (even though it was a whisper quiet fan too!!). I told him I could not do anything about this - the item was working fine, of course any moving part would make some noise!
Anyways, the item was brand new and sealed when sold - so as the seal had been opened and the item used, it was now worth much less if resold. Hence I refused the return request (I had stated no returns on the auction).
I got threatened with small claims court - the usual stuff.
Buyer then opened a PayPal claim, this time stating that the item was defective.
I contacted PayPal via phone, explained the situation - PayPal were actually very good. They asked me to send them screenshots of the closed eBay case, which was closed in my favour. As soon as I done this they closed the PayPal case in my favour also.

In the OP's case, the same would most likely have happened. If a PayPal case was raised you could show proof of the eBay closed case in your favour, and PayPal would have done the same.
If the item had been returned already I would have offered the buyer the choice to have ether item disposed of for free, or returned at their cost.
  • Case open/closed or not there should still be the option to cancel the sale for a full refund within 30 days of the order being placed.
