You are buying a highly depreciating asset whose depreciation is inversely proportional to it's age. Just when the depreciation is levelling out you swap it for another one with the highest depreciation possible. Crazy.
If you view cars as a service and can afford it then it's fine.
This thread has no point. It's someone complaining about people having shiny things.
I'm sorry @dipsomaniac but your point doesn't really seem to be about PCP (which can be a way to save money in some circumstances) but more about buying new cars in general, which I am sure is very easy to be envious of when you are behind the wheel of a 25-year-old Ford Galaxy.
If you had titled the thread "PCP isn't a good deal in lots of cases, despite being very popular" maybe the discussion would have been better received.
Those who do seem to want / have to live the pauper lifestyle on here never seem that happy with their lot, which surprises me, given they - presumably - then want people to do the same and be as (un)happy as they are?1 -

Just because you cant, doesnt mean others cant.
That "us" must mean the entire population. About 60 million in UK. So, the car that 99.9% cannot afford is one that can be afforded by only 0.1%. Are there cars that only around 60k people in UK can afford? Possibly McLaren, Rolls Royce, E-Type Jag. Bearing in mind it is not just purchase price, but running costs also. The idea that there are cars 99.9% of us cannot afford may be plausible.

dipsomaniac said:Wonder what the stats are for new cars going back to the garage for repairs in the first year? Saw a new roller being hoisted onto breakdown truck recently. Also my neighbour was without his brand new Merc for 6 weeks while they tried to fix the daytime running lights
And letting a garage keep your car for 6 weeks for broken DRLs is just stupid, just use it until the new lights are received.
DRLs aren't even an MOT failure.0 -
Can i just just say that cars are not my life. i am more than happy driving a £200 car. imo grumpy chap, bowfer and motorguy are trying far too hard to justify their cause"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0

Can we make Jenni D happy by agreeing that buying a new car every 3 years from new is NOT MSE????"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson1

Must have been an amazing site all those McLaren, Rolls Royce, E-Types all parading past.0 -

Theres many high end manufacturers come and pick your car up on a covered low loader for servicing, warranty work, recalls etc. Perhaps it was his chauffeurs day off?0 -
buying a new car every 3 years from new is what this thread is all about and is NOT MSE. motorguy, bowfer, grumpy_chap why are you trying to muddy the waters?"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0

So there is no "their cause" for me other than championing the right of everyone to drive what they want without being judged by others as to whether or not they can afford it.
Some of the cars i look back most fondly of have been the cheapest i've owned. I'd a Fiat Marea that cost me £90 and i did 400 miles a week in it for 9 months until the mot ran out and it wasnt going to pass with a rotten floorpan. I genuinely couldnt afford / justify anything better at that time. BUT, didnt make me bitter or resentful or judgemental of others who drove a better car than me
Pic of it for posterity.
