Return it and buy a proper powered one. You can get them for the same price from Amazon. If your PC doesn't have USB 3, then you don't need to waste your money on a USB 3 hub.

That will have a 500ma power limit might be getting tripped when you plug in something that wants to charge.

this hub is USB 3/C might be wanting more power

    general question to others
What's the behaviour of USB 2 on power overload does it shutdown the data channels?

the mouse is wired if that's what you mean, it works OK when plugged into the same slot as the hub but when plugged into the hub it not work.

Hub is going back but now the question is should I get the same kind or a different model?

I've got a Kingston 4 slot which has lasted about 10 years so far.

I foolishly thought that with it coming with a convertor that it would actually work properly and also that it would be 'future proofing' if I got myself a laptop with a USB 3C port at some point.

I did the return yesterday and got a replacement (different model) and that works just fine so far.

Did a straight swap at Argos for this one
Buy Port Connect 4 Port USB Hub | USB hubs | Argos
It has a shorted cable but it is still working and that's the main thing.
