In my old place of work (NHS hospital) there was always a collection for someone for something, usually major birthday milestones, weddings, family deaths, or because of the high turnover of staff in the department there was normally someone always seeing out their notice.

It got to the point where I refused to contribute. However when I left, I chose to keep it quiet that I was leaving so not to even contemplate anyone arranging a collection for me. I despised the idea of it all.

I'm surprised you were able to keep your leaving quiet.
I managed to keep my birth date out of the knowledge of my co-workers but only because I wasn't directly employed and if I was ever asked I would say I didn't believe in horoscopes and therefore kept the date secret.

We’ve had a few people leave lately, or go off on maternity leave. Most are people I’ve had nothing to do with, never met, had the odd minor phone call with.
I’ve not donated anything. Happy to give an amount to colleagues I know and respect, really don’t care what other people think of me for not giving to what are basically total strangers. If I want to do that, I’ll donate to a charity whose aims I agree with.
    You’re overthinking it.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Thanks everyone, I ended up putting in £5 everyone else has put in £10 but it is what it is and I'm going to try and not care too much about it!
Will you be checking to see whether any others follow your example?
Everyone has put in £10.00 but me so thought some people would do the same as me but no
You made your choice, others have made theirs, it's a free country.  It's not dissimilar to the situation I used to see often of people in the office coming round trying to get contributions for some charity activity their kids were doing.  Often the first half dozen donations were silly money and almost certainly from family.  I would put a pound or so as I didn't know the kid from Adam and the darn things were coming round virtually every week.
