Moved house. HUGE increase in energy bills
Help needed please!
We moved house 6 weeks ago. It is bigger than our old house 150sqm compared to 89sqm as my parents will be joining us in the annex. I appreciate bigger places use more energy even though annex currently not in use.
In my last house we spent less than £60 per month on gas & electric combined. When I've tried to set up direct debit it is based on previous owners usage - £240 per month!!!
I then decided to read meter each month until our usage in the system & its £296 for 1 month 9 days!
We did use more energy where 1) carpets stank & we cleaned & had windows open & heating high & then nest kept turning heating up by itself & 2) more tumble dryer until I installed a line.
3) it has a hot tub.
Even still...
I've bought an energy monitor but how do I know what is normal ie. Strip lighting in annex uses 3 times what the hot tub does...

Is your new home all electric?0

Much, much more info needed.
- Think kWh, not ££.
- What is your usage in kWh obtained from actual meter readings? Is this for gas, electricity or both?
- What are your kWh rates and daily charges, inc VAT?
- What evidence do you have that the lighting uses more than the hot tub? What is the lighting type? Which fuel heats the tub?
- Pics of meter readings and bill would help (redact personal info including account, S, meter numbers, etc.)

Will do. Unfortunately the bill pdf isnt working and call centre shut over weekend. I only have the cost not the kWh or unit prices. Anything I've quoted is from the energy monitor showing watts but I cant properly configure until I can get details from the energy company as the bill and app dont work!0

The hot tub can easily use 30-40kWh/day on its own…0

You dont need any info from the energy company to be able to go and read your meters and work out how much you are using although you do need to know what tariff you are on.
Try reading them night and morning for a week or so to get an idea of what your overnight consumption is compared to your daytime.Unless you leave stuff on overnight it will allow you to work out your base consumption (fridge, freezer, router, Sky box etc)
If your house is bigger, then it's probably got larger areas for the roof, walls and windows. Is it as well insulated as your old place. What sort of heating have you got, have you learned how to set up the timers and thermostats. As you say, you've been trying to heat the world if you've had the windows open and the heating on.
Turn stuff off - including the hot tub and systematically go around working out what is using it all. Have you been using vast quantities of hot water to clean the place - lots of differences between this place and your old one.You really do need to work out what is going on rather than getting into a blind panic.
You need to be monitoring your consumption in kwh not £££'s. I could easliy pay £350-£400 more for the same consumption if I were on a poor tariff.
Dunno about where you live but April has been much colder this year (frost most mornings) and we've used a lot more energy (about 35% or £40 more than we have for the same period in the last few years.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers1 -
Hot tubs eat heat. Try turning it off for a while and see what difference that makes.Reed0

That hot tub- 30/40kWh = £5/6 a day = £150 a month.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0

I had an issue with my SSE pdfs not working on the app. But when I logged in via a browser they worked0

Do we know whether it is all-electric yet?0

@roxalana even if you can't get at your previous bills or readings, what do your meters read now? Then read them again tomorrow and we will all know how much gas/electricity you are using in a day, which will give us something to work with.N.
