The really bad news is that the shipping and insurance costs are included for duty and VAT calculations so you have probably been hit with a double whammy. The original value of the goods on the customs slip (instead of the sale value), plus the $75 shipping.

See custardy's post for why some get hit and others not...

There were some threads on this forum about how to contest a customs valuation and how not to pay the parcelforce admin fee.

  • I was charged for some cosmetics by strawberrynet.com.

The lovely RM man did take the money from me at the door. He said he preferred it when people are out and he can leave a card ... as everyone thinks it is his decision to charge or not.

Anyhow, strawberrynet.com refunded all charges to me!

well the nice RM man is risking his job.
    thats not protocol.

imagine the story in the newspaper of fake posties with fake charge cards taking money at the door @ xmas!!

posties should never handle money at the door.it raises way to many security issues
  • To be honest, it might have been Parcelforce - do you know if they have different rules?
I'd hate for him to get in trouble and it would mean a return trip of 20+ miles to the nearest PF place. Thinking about it, if he couldn't take the money they would have simply posted a card saying 'come: pay and collect' rather than lug the parcel to my front door. I take your point about posties though. They blamed for enough without this.

My postie is so good. He had dropped a card through the door, then noticed we had come back home. He called back from the bottom of the road to give me the parcels in return for my card.
I wish there was a way to say thank you without risking him getting feedback (telling off) from his bosses for being customer focused and helpful.

I didn't get a receipt but had to give him the exact money (finding £20.83) at 7:30 on Saturday am in my dressing gown! It corrsponded with the HMC sticker on the parcel.
  • I'm sure Royal mail would much prefer it if they did not have to pay over the VAT to customs and then collect it from importers. But HMRC give them no choice.

I do object to parcel force charging me again when I've already paid £35 in postage.

Would you rather employ your own agent to fill in the paperwork and clear it through customs?

It would cost you a hell of a lot more.
