Voided postage label

Am hoping somebody can help with this as i seem to be going round in circles...On the 11th of March 2021 i sold an item on ebay, ebay generated an incorrect postage label for Royal mail..I took item to post office but next day it was returned, as i was told it was an incorrect label for size of item...It was 12kg...I contacted ebay and they apologised for the mistake they had made and advised me to take item to post office and send which i did, but had to pay again...1st label had cost me £29.55..Then had to pay another £30 to send...Long story short...I am still waiting for my refund which was paid to ebay through paypal from my bank account...Ebay are saying that the refund has to come from Royal mail...Royal mail have adamantly said ebay should be refunding me as it was them that generated the postage label...Ebay are saying it is Royal mail that should be refunding...I have made countless phone calls...It is not a huge amount of money but the whole thing is causing stress and anxiety to have to deal with this everyday....I am as i said...Going round in circles...PLEASE CAN YOU HELP!!😤

A little bit of clarification is needed.

firstly ebay don’t automatically generate labels, they generate the label that the seller sets up, so you put a weight in (if you haven’t already got that in the box on your listing) , check dimensions and choose the postal or courier option. If it’s simple, and I had a couple of signed for today , it does pre tick the box they think is correct but you can just choose to opt for something else. One of mine showed a weight of 200g 2nd class small parcel and was actually 300g as I had to use a bigger box than anticipated as I’d run out of little ones, so I just adjusted the weight.

Secondly £29.55 is a signed for 2nd class medium parcel up to 20kg , so for a 12 kg item (assuming it was within the medium parcel size limit) appears correct.

As it went through the system the label was effectively used , so I can’t see RM paying out as the label wasn’t void, it was used but wrong (and I’m very susprised you got it back next day and it didn’t just turn up at the buyer with an amount to pay)

on eBay you need to void the label yourself if it is not used and I think that’s where you are going to come unstuck as it was used. However, the voiding is down to you and is semi automatic, you click to void label as unused and it trundles through the system and you are eventually refunded, usually in about 7 days.

As it stands there is something amiss with your parcel, firstly why it is eBay’s fault the label was wrong , secondly why it was wrong and thirdly how it turned up back with you the next day.

  • Thanks for your message...As a new seller on ebay i went through the channel of choosing a label on the ebay site which they then sent me to print this label...Took item to Post Office which they accepted...But next morning returned to me...After contacting ebay...And voided the label, which  they admitted they were at fault, also waivered my selling fees...As a sign of goodwill..and advised me to take item to post office and send which i then went and another label was put onto item then sent with no problem for another £30...1st label as i have been told by ebay has been voided...Royal mail have told me that ebay buy bulk postage labels from them so therefore it is ebay that should refund me....Ebay are saying it is Royal mail....The amount was paid through paypal from my bank account...So am wondering if paypal is my next course of action...Fed up with the whole thing to be honest....Just being told to go backwards and forwards.

Ebay don’t bulk buy pre paid labels, it doesn’t work like that. Packlink , which is the company that ebay use for postage, is just a middleman and usually can slightly undercut RM Post office prices. They don’t pre buy anything, they just link you to the Royal Mail system , you put your weight and dimensions in and buy a label. The price depends on what you add for size and weight.

Your contract is with packlink with via ebay,  Royal Mail do not have any involvement with your refund as you did not purchase direct from them. Your refund will depend on why you bought the wrong label, you’ve said a couple of times that ebay gave you the label , I have been assuming that this was due to a sale you made and it has suddenly occured to me that it might be a change of mind return with you as they buyer - is that correct?

I still don’t understand how the item came back to you the next day that makes no sense at all as Royal Mail don’t return parcels next day , they tend to just charge the recipient and underpayment

my worry is still that if the label was used to get the parcel into the system then it can’t be voided as you can only void an unused label.

    This is my thought.
Seems common Ebays Tracked return labels default to 1/2kg (cant recall which) on items way over
