Have been a customer for well over ten years. Maybe four callouts in that time. Never had to resort to getting transport home. Always been fairly prompt in getting someone there and in settling account. But price has increased considerably over the last four years.
I wish they'd do either a no call out bonus or £20 excess per call out with reduced annual premium. I've been with them 20 years and I'm resenting the £60 annual cost. I'll do minor roadside repairs and fix punctures myself as its often quicker.
20 x £60 is £1200. I've had two recoveries, total about £400 and one call out, £60? I'd have been £740 better off without it.

I've looked into AA, RAC basic cover knowing it can be uprated if recovery is needed but never found the cost of uprating at the roadside. Anyone done this and know the cost?

So why not just "self-insure", and PAYG if you do need recovery?

Considering it. Problem is knowing who to call if miles from home.

I'd also be dealing with sods law.

Yell has a "Breakdown recovery" category.
The two entries for my nearest town are one of the garages... and the local contractor to AutoAid etc.
